Anyone been to a youth regional? What grades are the redpoint and finals problems in general?

At the regional competition in the Pacific Northwest... taking place in Oregon ... the bouldering problems I think will be on-sight V7's and higher... but there are different categories ....

I think the format is like... 3 minutes to on-sight a V7 basically... so realistically you get two shots at a V7 you've never seen before... maybe three attempts... points are awarded for establishing and getting "usable surface" on holds...

after the three minutes they have a one minute transition period to the next problem, where they can change shoes, re-chalk and rest / whatever... but they sit facing away from the problem usually... and can get disqualified if they don't start the problem in a set amount of time in their 3 minutes...

Basically... it's nuts

Depends on your age bracket...

The setters in each area will set according to the relative strength of the kids in each division in their region. Meaning that in the 11andUnder Division, one region might set 2-V0s, 1-V1, and 1-V2. While in another region with stronger Kids, they might set 1-V0, 1-V2,1-V3, and 1-V4.

I would expect (as mentioned in an earlier reply), that if you are in the 14-15 Male (or above) bracket and climbing in a strong region, a V7 would be likely.

Thank you Justin for trying to explain.........

The youth ABS Regional taking place this weekend at Clubsports Gym in Tigard OR will be an "Onsite" format.

Climbers in each catagory will be climbing 4 routes. They will have 4 minutes to attempt each route with a 30 second transition between routes. They will have a rest period between each route.

Route grades will be determined by the strength of each catagory coming to the event. The route setters are very professional, and study the field during the regular season.

Points are awarded for the highest hold controled, along with points added for "Flashing" a route, and points deducted for "Attempts".

This is a standard format for Youth Competitons, and the climbers know how to get it done.
