Living in Wichita, Kansas currently-- seven hours to anything climbable. Looking at a job in Fargo, North Dakota. Anyone know how far it is from Fargo to some decent rock?

Man that sucks. You're moving from Kansas, which has 0 routes, to N. Dakota, which has 4. And I think PA sucks.

MooseDroppings, Thanks for the help! 500+ miles right now from Wichita to the Front Range, so, aside from the fact that climbing in RMNP just can't be beat, I guess there are worse tradeoffs. Anybody got a gauge on the mileage to the nearest climbable chosspile?

Hey I live in Fargo, The closest climbing is the blue mounds which I haven't been, that is about 4 hours straight south. Then there is Minnesota which has a ton of climbing. Taylors falls which is my favorite crag is 4 and a half hours away. Taylors falls is just north of Minneapolis. The third closest is Red Wing which is, I think just a hair longer than taylors falls but it is south of minneapolis. But there is still more. If you got east there is Duluth which has Elys peak but that is really small. Go just north of Duluth and there is North Shore, which is some awesome climbing right on the shore of Lake Superior. Duluth is 5 hours away. There is the needles like someone said already and some other stuff in Wisconsin but thats quite a bit further away. So there is climbing around just not super close. And if you do move here order the Falcon Guide By Mike Farris called Rock Climbing Minnesota and Wisconsin. Email me if you have any other questions. Edit: Taylors Falls - All trad or TR Blue Mounds - All Trad or TR Red Wing - All sport except for 1 or 2 trad routes Elys Peak - All Trad or TR North Shore - All Trad or TR The Needles - Trad and Sport

The Palisades just outside Sioux Falls are about 30-40 min closer than Blue Mounds. I believe the same rock, slippery quartzite. Edges and Cracks. http://www.outdoorplaces.com/Destination/stateparks/southdakota/palisades/index.htm or see the routes section for more info.

I go to school in Lincoln NE and have been to both Palisades and Blue Mounds. Blue Mounds is a little better, they have a lot more routes, both are easy to top rope if you can build an anchor with pro. I think they may be closer then 40 mins apart, I've gone to both in the same weekend and seemed like they were only 10 miles apart, maybe its longer though. Its a ok place to climb the rock is a little slick but its better then nothing.

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is less than 4 hours from Wichita, KS. I would consider it decent rock. I just added six climbable hours to your next trip! Looks like you are moving from a place with climbing 4 hours away to a place with climbing 4 hours away.

Yeah. It's more like 5 hours to the Wichitas. Nice cragging, but, when it's only two more hours to the Front Range, you kind of start to justify the longer trip. Thanks for ALL of the help and ideas, folks! I agree with climberman15 - looks like it's pretty much an even trade (except that I won't be seeing RMNP as much ). May even squeak an extra hour or two out of the day trip drive . . . Gotta think about buying a silo with a good sprinkler system if I move up there, eh? Great way to justify some ice gear!

From Kansas to Fargo. That's funny, in a sad sort of way. Looks like you got to bolt the bridge overpass by Chubs pub or something.

Quarry Park, near St. Cloud has some climbing, a couple of TR's and a sport lead or 2. Ranging from 5.6 to 5.12. Nothing special. http://www.co.stearns.mn.us/1450.htm#Rock Bluemounds is great, but don't head there in Mid-summer, (HOT) and watch out for the cactus, the only place in Minnesota where It grows. Head to Taylors Falls or Red Wing, although both of these places get extremelybusy on the weekends when all of the gym rats run from the Twin Cities and attempt to climb outside. There are some good places to climb off the trail at Taylors falls to escape from the masses, and Red Wing isn't to bad as long as your climbing 5.10 s or harder, other wise bring a head lamp and start climbing when the crowd vanishes. Have fun, and please let me know if you would like more info on any of those areas. Oh yeah, one more, just across the Minnesota Border into Wisconsin sitting between Taylors Falls and Red Wing is Willow River. If you make your way east and the rain clouds follow, head there, you will stay dry and be able to climb all day long. But do check with the park, they have some weird hours, at least for climbers.

Not EVEN funny. Definitely sad. Oh well, got a family to care for and have to make the right decision for everybody. Good thing is that the job would be in academia-- which means summers devoted to the research I'll never get done during the school year. If I work things right, I'm hoping to do all that research from a terminal in a summer home near Estes Park. That would be a worthwhile trade if I can swing it! Thanks for all the really good input, folks. The Routes area on rc.com is great, but it's not the easiest tool to use to find what's closest to any particular area. Was looking for the local beta, and you delivered. Krosbakken- Just shot you an email with more details.
