I like the sharpness of all three, but the first two are way washed out... the challenge of photographing snow/ice is finding the shadows and making it compelling. The washed out nature of the photos removes the medium that the climber is ascending completely and ruins the picture imho.

The ice is featureless. The high lights are completely gone. Even for artistic effect it doesn't work.
With digital you've got to watch the histogram, preferably the individual channels and not the combined grey channel. Sometimes Red and Green are not clipped but blue is blown out but the combined grey channel looks OK.
With film, just meter off the ice/snow and open up 1-1.5 stops (you can do this with digital as well if you want).

Next time when posting pictures you should name the file with the extension of the file type. In this case they are jpeg's, so the file should be 1235123.jpg and not "%26%2326032". It's good to just use alphanumeric characters for filenames as well.

I am considering the D300 as my photogrpahy buy for May. I have enough in my paypal thanks to a good month in photo sells and the camera has ben geting my attention for awhile.
I really like the bigger files. This will mean less upsizing for my RM stock sites and the like. Of course, more MP mean more processing time and bigger CF cards.
I bough a MAC a couple months ago, guess I need more RAM ADDED now, I now have PSCS3, I guess I might as well get the camera too.

I was sold on one at the beginning of the year when I was able to borrow one from a friend of mine to go out and take for a test drive. I picked one up several months ago and couldn't be happier with it. Last month a friend of mine had a little dinner party at her house and I brought the camera along to play with and was blown away with the quality of the images I was getting at 1250 and 1600 ISO.
Then just a few weeks ago I picked up the MB-D10 battery grip for it before shooting at the Kern River Festival and shot over 1600 frames in the two day event. I had the thing loaded up with 8AA batteries (the damn thing gets real heavy loaded with AA's and a telephoto lens) and was firing away at 8 fps as guys were going over waterfalls in their kayaks. The focusing system came in real handy for the event as well.
So far I've gotten nothing but pleasant results from shooting with it after stepping up from a D70 and D200. The camera has my vote for sure.

After some serious consideration, I have decided not to get the D300. Instead, I will use the cash towards another lens. My D80 is threating me well. I have not needed high ISO and my files are fine for what I do.
I also like the weight of the D80, much lighter when I shoot al day.
