So I'm thinking of flying out of Denver and making my way to the valley early this summer. Any suggestions on logistics? I've found that flying to Oakland is cheapest. However, I figure it would take all day to ride a bus to merced, then transfer to the YERTS (?) into the valley. Is there a quick and dirty to getting to the valley? What's your experience? Thanks. BTW - renting a car I think would be far too expensive.

So it does take about a day to take the bus system from the bay area to merced and then transfer to YARTS. However, unless you can find someone to give you a ride, it's pretty much the most reliable way to go. If you can get some one to post a note on the kiosk at camp 4 asking for a ride, that might help, or you might be able to find a ride on craigs list, super topo, or maybe even here. I dunno what your budget/time frame is, but I rented a car out of oakland for 3 weeks this fall for about $400. If you can get someone to split it with you, then this isn't too bad, and may save you money/aggravation when it comes to groceries ect.

Thanks for your reply. I'm definitely on the former-dirtbag, current-student budget. But I'm also on a 2.5 week time budget as well. If travel time is WAY too extensive, I'm thinking of heading to the Creek or somewhere driveable instead :( Although I'm afraid it'll be too hot there May 12- June 1.

While I have only ever driven in myself, a big consideration when I go is just finding legitimate camping, I have gotten camp 4 sites early season, but by summer I always seem SOL by summer time, so personally I wouldn't bank on a site there as for sure. If your plan was to bandit camp it, well... my hat's off to you if you do it without pissing a whole bunch of people off.

You leave the camping to me. The hard part is getting there.

I went last summer, and got free rides both ways. On the way there I just posted a bunch on climbing websites (supertopo is a good one) till I found someone headed to the valley the day I flew in. And on the way back I just hitched, it wasn't too bad just got to leave extra time.
