I'm going to the Red with some friends for a week in March. What are some rest day activities nearby for when we're pumped silly or for when it rains? Any nice local hikes besides the natural bridge? Local Caves? ect...

you can easily climb in the rain at the red. rest day stuff is pretty limited. lexington is a full hour away and its the closest city. I suppose hiking would be cool. Try maybe climbing slab or something instead for a day and pace yourself so you can climb all week.

I didn't know there was much slab at the Red. Can you recommend any areas with a decent amount of slab?

Depending on temps, you could go for a dip to cool off...although I wouldn't count on swimming much in March. There's a whole wall of slab routes at the far end of roadside ranging from 5.7 to 5.10d or so. These would be the most accessible/fun to play on for a rest day. Other option may be Ale 8 factory tour or catch a movie in Winchester.

be careful even in the summer about doing this... most of the places we swim are illegal... Winchester is not too far away and the mantinee movies are cheap and there is a local resterant not far from there...
you can always try and hit every single little tourest place in slade... lol I think we made a whole 3 hours by doing this... miguels is normally fun and you can almost always get someone to at least play bball or monopoly/cards or something with ya... get a hammock and read a book? ENJOY!!!

I just have a question to tag onto this thread, since me and a few friends are goin to the Red march 16-22+. How is the weather there this time of year? I've heard its pretty rainy, but what about temps and stuff? Just tryin to get a better idea of what to pack for clothes.
Good info about movies and all that jazz, definately gona help us out after the first few days when our arms are screaming, "NO MORE!!! PLEASE!!! NO MORE!!!" lol

Yeah I hear what your sayin climbhigh, reservoir is a no go, as is the place by whittleton unless you wanna just wade in the creek. The best place I've found is by the suspension bridge on KY715 I believe? Instead of turning left and heading up to Phantasia wall, you go straight and you'll see a turn off a few miles back on the right side. Unfortunately, the tree that had the rope swing on it was cut down this past sept. or so. There is still a decent beach and a 15-18 foot rock to jump off of. Some local said the water was 24 feet deep where you jump off.
Oh and as for more rest day stuff, try and beat Mark in chess.

Just hang out at Miguels - bring your laptop, watch fox on demand, movies etc, or read...not much in the area...though hiking up to the natural bridge is maybe 3 hours of a day well spent.

Rest days - Miguel's - he has wireless internet, good food, gear, etc.
You could hike up to the Natural Bridge. There are some other hiking trails and you can get maps at the visitor center in the park.
Don't forget the beer trailer.
Slab - Roadside is good. Also there is a new area at Muir Valley that is called Calvin Hollow. The wall is Animal Crackers. Very moderate climbing, the hardest climb being a 10b and it is pretty easy.

Go past Miguels and down 11 about 6 miles and it is on the right. You have to go out of Powell County. It is just past Torrent Falls where the Via Ferrata is.

Oh, and you can have some really good BBQ at the trailer at Torrent Falls. There is a yucky duck pond out back and they usually have a fire at night.

Wow these are some weak responses. If you are a yuppie climber, camp and hang out at miguels. It's a nice place and climber friendly but it is expensive to eat, crowded and plenty of superiority complexes to go around. I don't camp there anymore, I buy a rec pass and my money goes to managing the natural resources. I have a handful of places that I camp at to actually enjoy the outdoors and nature all while sharpening my minimum impact and LNT ethics.
As for swimming holes recommended, don't do it. The water will be around 40 degrees.
I can't give you directions but check out Grey's arch, Indian Staircase and nearby recess cave, Half moon arch (3rd class required), and 1/4 mile cave (which will blow your mind if you can find it. DONT take your dog BTW) and nearby large arch on your way back down to the trail. If you go to 1/4 mile cave, bring a headlamp, and water jug to fill up at a HUGE spring that dumps into the Red River on your way back.
The Red has alot to offer and is home to more than miguels and great climbing. It has the largest concentration of arches and natural bridges in the WORLD.
P.S. bring some ear plugs to dull the sound of the mating call of the whiporwhill which can keep you up all night.

If you have wheels and you really don't feel like climbing in the rain, head out to the Woodford Reserve Distillery, west of Lexington. Very cool old distillery with historic buildings, etc. They have their own exit on the highway between Lex and Lou. Regardless of how much money you have, the horsey homes you drive past on the way into the distillery will make you feel poor. Enjoy the bourbon...

Woody's in Winchester for booze, have to go to Lex for titty bars, you can smoke at Woody's but not at bars in Lex. Horse park in Georgetown would be a diversion for a rainy day, some bouldering in the Red but it mostly sucks.
