I live in St. Paul, MN and a buddy and I were contemplating on driving to rapid city to do some sport, TR, and bouldering this week, march 17-21. Also, maybe stop in Sioux Falls for a day and hit up the Palisades. I've never climbed in South Dakota, let alone this time of year. What should I expect? Is it worth the 8 hr drive to climb Spearfish or Custer? Any input appreceited.

Definately worth the drive. Spearfish is all bolted and posts a great range of walls. The only problem is that the Black Hills are really cold. I don't know what the weather is like in the spring. I have heard, however, that the Sunshine Wall in Spearfish Canyon gets enough sun to warm it up for climbing in even December and January. That wall posts climbs mainly in the 5.10 to 5.12 range. Granite Sports in Hill City will have guidebooks for out there. I haven't climbed the trad areas out there, but have heard they are some of the best little known routes.

I am looking to climb in the Palisades, I am travelling down from Alberta and am wondering what I will need to bring down to climb there. Are all the climbs top rope, and how easily is it to access the top of the crags to set up the top ropes? Are the anchors bolted, and will I need a rack and what type of rack should I be bringing. Any help would be great.

The more webbing you bring the more options you will likely have for gear placements. You can probably get by with a passive rack.
