with the recent plane crash in venezuela, i was wondering if a plane has ever crashed into a climbing route? sounds ridiculous, but would be an interesting read.

Near Albuquerque NM there was recently a small plane that crashed into a very large and famous formation known as The Shield. I'm not sure if it hit any of the routes specifically, but I know that rock has many routes all over it...

According to what someone told me (yes this whole story is 2nd hand from people who watched the local news) they were unable to recover all of the wreckage because some of it was "stuck" in the rock....

I don't know exactly about the parts stuck in the rock, but I know for sure that a plane did crash into The Shield.

I think that's what makes it sad. Other than that the story was awesome.

Good point. I'll pose a similar question: Aside from all the murdered Jews, homosexuals, Gypsies, Communists, etc., why was the Holocaust such a bad thing?

Aren't the murders what made it the holocaust?

hey dipshits, read the link. it was about someone climbing the towers back in the day. not about what happened September 11.

edited to add: you guys must of read my post wrong, it was reffering only to the link, not the events that happened after.

In 1955, United Airlines Flight 409 crashed into the side of Medicine Bow Peak, in Wyoming; there were no survivors. Engines and other fragments of the plane are still present at the base of the cliff. A memorial stone and plaque were placed near the crash site, known as "Disaster Wall", in August 2001.

i pasted this from another site. i've got no idea whether or not it hit any of the established routes. in 1955, there probably weren't any established routes. i'm going to try to make it down there this summer. i'll let you know what i find out.

This is super famous, there were rumors for years that some guys on the plane was smuggling 10,000$ and a bunch of peope explored the area to try to find it. I wish I had climbed that beast.

Peak C-141 in the Olympic Mountains in Washington State was first climbed to get to the plane crash by rescuers. Does that count? There is some interesting discussion buried in this thread http://cascadeclimbers.com/...umber/746580/fpart/1

A small plane crashed into the side of a cliff 100yds from one of the best routes of the cliff to which I am referring. I would tell you the name of the crag, but then I would have to kill you... btw the plane is still there since the slope where it now rests is so steep, but somebody salvaged the prop and engine a long time ago.
