I don't personally know Gallatin Canyon, but if it's like any other rocks in the west...... It's poo. I don't know what it looks like, but it could be long-accumulated bird poop, or bat poop, or even rodent poop. Packrats, for instance, are better climbers than you and I are, and they can get just about anywhere. I even heard a story from a local fellow who witnessed a packrat climbing one of his fixed lines. If it's not poo, which it probably is, it could be mineral deposit........I've seen that as well. Sometimes it looks kind of like bird poop. So, you've completed step one of the three-step poop-test. 1.) Does it look like poop? 2.) Does it smell like poop? 3.) Does it taste like poop? Let us know.

Thank Tree_wrangler, If memory serves me I can complete steps one through two of the three-step poop-test: 1.) Yes, it looks like poo 2.) No, it doesn't really smell like poo 3.) More investigation needed I was thinking it might be either some type of fungi. Your suggestion of a mineral deposit is very interesting. I'm pretty sure it's not rodent. I'm fairly familiar with their feces...if it is poo it must be either bird/bat.

It could also be dirt that secreted through the fissures in the rock. I've always thought it was poo though, so I haven't dug through it to find out. Pat

Haven't been out to the red cliffs, but I climb in the main part of the Canyon a fair amount. Is it black? Shiny? in mounds or clusters? Probably hard as rock....we call it petrified shit...could be packrat or perhaps bat...but I'm pretty sure it's shit. Never tasted it though...but sometimes in the overhangs or chimneys where it's at you get a nice whiff of the musk...pretty sure I'm gonna get the hanta virus...
