I'll be in Queretaro from Abril 9 - 23. I have to work on the weekdays but want to climb on the weekends... is there a way to go to Monterrey from Queretaro on the weekend (looks far in a map but ideally i would like to climb at Potrero Chico)... ...If so, can someone give me beta on how to make this happen? If not possible, what other places close to Queretaro are good options? Thanks.

You're looking at about a 7 or 8 hour drive--way too much for a week-end. The place you want to go is Bernal which is just outside of Queretaro. Beautiful place, great climbing. Another place near Queretaro, about 1 1/2 hours south, is Aculco--another beautiful area with great climbing.

okay, thanks for beta…wow, sounds like a lot of distance even on an airplane (I’m guessing 200-300 USD for air ticket?)….. I really appreciate the information though, thanks!

Here's some good news. I just checked and found that Mexico's new low cost airline has flights to Monterrey from Queretaro for 9 dollars each way--goes up to 40 dollars on Sunday. They don't have a lot of flights so it's smart to purchase a ticket soon. Go to vivaaerobus.com and check it out. If you do make plans let me know and I'll pick you up in Monterrey and save you the 40 dollar cab ride to Hidalgo.

I have to second the suggestion to visit Pena de Bernal, it's quite close and the climbing is on excellent rock up to several pitches long. I met a few locals and was very pleased with the obvious pride they had in their area. Check out the database. PM if you want contacts.

Hi, One of my best friends runs a guiding business based in San Juan del Rio, Queretaro, 30 minutes from Queretaro. He is very good, knows all the climbing areas, and he does mountain biking tours too. jaherrev@fl.com.mx jrevuelta_mx@yahoo.com.mx He is called Jorge Hernandez, even if you just want info on the area, send him a line.
