Check out "The Obed" aka the Obed Creek... if I remember correctly (its been a couple years) it is about 1 - 1.5 hours from Nashville and has a multitude of sport routes... Not sure about bouldering Check it out: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...s/Tennessee/Eastern/

king's bluff is about an hour drive from Nashville to the north - It's near Clarksville, TN. Foster Falls is another GREAT sport area, to the south, sort of close to Jasper, TN, about 2 hours away. Obed is great, but is closer to Knoxville than Nashville. Check out the Dixie Cragger's Atlas for good directions and route info. feel free to pm me if you have a question or want to go out some time

Check out Bee Rock, Hidden and Spider rock. There in monteray exit 300 real close 55 min away from Nashville. the obed is in Wartburg which is around 2 and 2.5 hrs away from the Ville. Lots of top-roping, bouldering, trad, three or four sport routes.

I'm coming to Nashville(murfreesboro) in Oct. I'm torn between Kings Bluff and Foster Falls. I'll be bringing some inexperienced family along. Is one better for newbs? Which has taller routes?

Foster Falls has taller routes. That said, there isn't much there for your family (a 5.5, a 5.7, and only a couple 5.8's.) King's Bluff has more beginner friendly routes, and has the advantage of having tags at the bottom of each climb with the name and grade, so that you could go there without a guidebook.

Thanks for your help. I did get a copy of the "Deep South..." guide which should help. I was leaning toward Fosters since the trails looked easy for gramma and the falls seemed attractive. Either way, thanks for the reply.

The approach for foster falls is about 20+ minutes, probably, while the approach for king's bluff is <5 minutes. Both trails have some notably rough sections. That said, foster's is way more beautiful and has better climbing.

Good to know. I now realize that "Deep South" doesn't have Kings Bluff in it. If there's another ideal area with this proximity to Murfreesboro, I'd like to hear it. Thanks for your help. Off Topic - Any TN climbers into bluegrass? I see IBMA is having their shindig in Oct when I'm there. Looking forward to some friends, Britt&Brent, playing out.

I don't know if you've heard of Short Mountain in Woodbury, it's only 20 minutes away from Murfreesboro. It's definitely good for a short day trip. It's good for bouldering and has a few sport climbs. It definitely doesn't compare to Foster Falls or Kings Bluff, but it's really convenient.

Thanks for the help. There's a number of areas I'd like to explore when I get back down there. I enjoyed Kings Bluff, but was hoping I could find an easier approach for Gramma and Grampa to watch the grandkids climb. I think next time we'll look towards Chattanooga like Foster Falls.

Hey everyone, I'm from Brooklyn and i'll be visiting my lady's family in Nashville so we thought it'd be cool to hit up Obed on our way back. Most likely the Lilly Boulders trail (unless anyone knows of something better that's closer to Nashville). We'll be passing by on Labor Day weekend and I was wondering if you could tell me what the problems are like in terms of difficulty. I myself am a v4/5 climber outdoors and my girlfriend has never touched real rock before but climbs v1 indoors. Will there be problems there easy enough for a beginner to tackle? Is there a pro shop near by to buy a crash pad/guide & beta books? Is there any where near by to camp? Thanks!

Nashville Cumberland Transit outdoor store is your best bet for gear. There is a new Obed guidebook you should get. Lily Boulders will likely be quite humid., but they are in the shade, at least. If she climbs V1, there is a traverse wall that has a bunch of big holds and is low to the ground, that's her best bet. anyone maxing at v1 indoors, -not a whole lot anywhere outside in that range. Camping at Del and Martys is super nearby and $5/night/person, super cool folks. Info in the new Obed guide.

I'm also an out of towner that's going to be coming to the Nashville area to meet the old lady's parents and we were thinking of hitting up the Obed for a camp/climb session on our way back to Brooklyn. as far as bouldering goes, should i pass up Bee Rock for the Obed area? it's closer but according to this site there isn't any bouldering at Bee Rock. i guess cause no one has submitted bouldering problems, or it hasn't been updated maybe?! it seems from what i've read that Obed has more to offer in bouldering and there's camping there too. any info on the Bee Rock area would be super helpful, thanks.

From Nashville, don't overlook King"s Bluff in Clarksville. Plenty of routes in every grade and a great place find some easy and moderate routes too. http://www.amazon.com/...311766590&sr=8-1 They is also a limestone bouldering traverse wall in Nashville area. Nice for a quick workout if the Obed is to far.
