Are there any climbing gyms or outside bouldering areas in the Jackson, MS area? Searching rc.com and Google only turns up something in Starksville, MS which is 2+ hours from Ridgeland where I'll be next week. Thanks. -hch

There is a small indoor wall at the Mississippi College Healthplex in Clinton. About 30 feet high, with a potential for 20+ routes. I did most of the setup about 10 years ago, but haven't been there for several years. They only allowed toprope the last time I was there. There's no outside climbing in the area.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure they still operate the climbing wall at the HealthPlex. Their web site doesn't list it as a facility and a note in the routes section states it is closed since Nov 2006. -hch

That doesn't really surprise me. It was a money pit from the word go. They had no idea what they were getting in to when they hired the company to construct the wall. They paid something like 80 grand to a company that went belly up after signing the construction contract. The wall wasn't finished until 3-4 months after the grand opening, and they didn't realize they would have to purchase holds, ropes, anchor equipment, or any climbing gear. They hired me to sort things out and run the wall, but then ignored my advice on how to set policy. For two years, they wouldn't allow non-members to come in and climb, and no climbers would fork out the huge membership fees. I left after about 6 months and only went back once because an old friend was working there. Things had gotten much worse and they refused to fork out the dough to replace broken holds and worn out equipment. Oh well. As far as I know, the closest gym is in New Orleans. The closest climbable rock is in Tishomingo State Park on the north side of Tupelo.

If you happened to come around birmingham you can always go to the moss rock preserve and climb. I just thought that you might want to know. Just in case.
