Electrical tape didn't hold up very well so I took it off my gear. I've seen gear identification tape for sale, but it looks just like more colored electrical tape.
Can someone steer me towards a id tape products that they've have good results with.

try trango rack tags. ive never used them myself but supposedly they dont melt in the sun or leave any residue on your gear

I've always just used colored electric tape. If I notice that it's starting to come off or something, just rip it off and slap on some new tape. YMMV

I second the trango rack tags. They stay on as well as or better than any of the other methods I've tried and a conveniently shaped. The only problem with them is that you can't easily print things on them. I tried. It rubs right off. Mal, if you're listening. . .

Duct tape comes in a variety of flavors anymore. You can also use nail polish or get one of those little bottles of car touch up paint.

My friend got me some of that "The Mark" stuff from Boulder Based Designs. I reccomend it.
It seems a bit weird to put expoxy on it, but I've put some moderate abuse on the gear since it was applied and it isn't even scratched.

I use grahic arts sign vinyl, which is used in sign shops. It comes in dozens of colors and since there is a lot of waste in printing signs most places will give scraps away for free. As it has to hold up in outdoor signage it is long lasting....

Dylan, yes it does hold up to the weather well but does not hold up to scrapes and bangs at all!!
See my sig. . though I do use it and scraps are cheap or even free depending on the source.
My stuff is the sweet little reflective stuff

Actually I did check the Adkhunter website but not being a hunter I did not make it past the dead bear with the arrow threw its neck on the front page.....

I'd definitely recommend "The Mark" from Boulder based designs. When you're applying it, don't expect to make any super intricate designs though. It likes to stick to whatever you're using to apply it with.
That said, it's been on my gear for about 3 months now with no signs of wear and tear at all.

The tags basically look like labels you could run through a printer. I bought a pack or two to label pretty much everything I own, including biners. It'd be pretty great to not only be able to label it with a color, but also with a name, e-mail, whatever and not have to do it by hand. It'd be really nice if I leave something on a crag by accident.*
I didn't try sharpie. Think that'll stay on?
*Booty doesn't count. You bailed, deal with the consequences.

Try these cable markers. Works well and seem to be lasting.
I have actually cut each 'marker' into three which allows enough room for my initials written with a sharpie. It makes them go further even if they are cheap in price already.
The clear coat seems to preserve the writing well. Plus they don't seem to leave sticky residue like elec tape.
Would be good if they came in different colors though.

fuck it all. why bother with tape, when a light dusting of spray paint in some hey areas would be easier to apply, last longer, and be just as quick to pick out?
spray your stopper wires with a good coat (the high points will wear off quite quickly, but there will be residual color flecks down in the cables), hit the underside of the lobes on your cams, and spray your carabiners along the manufacturers mark on the spine (similar results as the stopper wires).
Just make sure your "friends" don't have a similar color to yours, and there should never be a problem. Cams are easy to spot while they're hanging on a rack/sling, stopper wires stand out even in the worst of conditions (or with a headlamp, but lets b-real, huh?)
Tape always comes off. Paint... not so much.

Don't bother will of these tags and tape. The simplest way to mark gear is with a letter punch from the hardware store. They are around $2+ a piece. Get your first and last initial or any combination you choose. Grab a hammer, give each one a light tap or two and presto, your gear is marked for life. I did this to all my gear years ago. I never have problems id'ing my gear.
And no, your not going to trash your gear.

Pin stripe tape for cars. Lots of colors, widths, and combinations. Most autoparts stores have some.

I mark my gear with nail polish. Its the best way to go. You have to reapply every 6-8 months or so with heavy use but you can always ID and it doesn't get caught in stuff.

Spray paint is the WAY. Red, orange, yellow and light green are taken though.
Try hot pink or mauve. Start to finish - 5 minutes. Repeat every 2-3 years. Can tell your gear from a pile 10-feet away.

Why not use colored Zip ties? Just zip it cut off the excess and viola they come in all sorts of colors

That's honestly one of the most unconventional, yet great ideas ever, just place the ties in spots where they won't get in the way (like inside hexes or larger nuts). But what about the areas where the tie could poke you? Do you just use a lighter to melt it a little bit to not be pointy?

One more vote for nail polish.
I got the cheapest, ugliest color I could find at the drug store (purple!) and painted everything where there was good nooks and crannies; ends of stoppers and hexes, triggers of cams, and noses of biners (for easy ID of opening end).
I've tried tape and shrink tubing in the past but they all came off sooner or later. The nail polish last a long time and you can touch it up in a jiffy.
