UPDATE

N.H. forest fire burns on, though progess is being made
Email|Print|Single Page| Text size + June 3, 2008
RUMNEY, N.H.A stubborn fire in the White Mountain National Forest is expected to be fully contained Wednesday, a week after it started on a steep mountainside.

more stories like thisThe fire on Rattlesnake Mountain is being fueled by decaying wood, wind and dryness. The U.S. Forest Service has had to bring in reinforcements from as far away as Illinois, but there were signs of progress.

The forest service said Tuesday that crews have completed a fireline around 90 percent of the 54-acre fire. When fully contained, that perimeter won't spread any farther, but hotspots on the interior may continue to burn or smolder.

Don Muise -- the fire management officer for the White Mountain National Forest -- said that in terms of hours spent, helicopter flights to drop water any other work, the fire is likely to rank as one of the biggest logistical efforts in the forest in recent years. The fire area is steep and hard to reach.

The fire began May 28 and grew rapidly from about nine acres to 50 acres after burning debris cascaded down cliff walls.

Muise said it is still unknown how the fire started, but it appears to have been caused by humans.

He said some of the charring of the area looks worse than it is, and some of the fire might be beneficial.

"There's certainly some benefits. It's gotten rid of some fuels," that had the potential to cause fires later. While he said some of the area looks bad now, "a lot of it will come back."

NEClimbs has the most recent information.

However, Rumney is open as of today. Caution is recommended about the use of fixed gear (Draws, biners, and bolts?) at the crags that saw the fire nearest them. Keep to the trails and be cautious and alert for any loose soil.

We are talking about going on Sunday. Will you be there, Jake?

Thanks, Epoch (oops - I called you Edge!)! The NEclimbs page still has a 'Rumney closed' announcement at the top of their page. But that was last updated May 29.
