Any suggestions on which guidebook to get for the Meadows? Supertopo is well known for The Valley, but is it as good for the Meadows, too?

I'm only going to be in Toulumne for a couple of days, so I don't need every route on-hand. Just the classics will do.

Thanks!

Supertopo will be fine if all you want are the classics but there are many other routes at Tuolomne that aren't listed in the Supertopo and many of these are high quality. Also, just my preference, but I can't stand that the supertopo guidebooks give you every little detail such as rack, crux, and pitch by pitch descriptions. IMO- too much info that takes away from the experience. I would suggest the Falcon Guide by Chris Falkenstein

Thanks. That's another book I was looking at, but the reviews on Amazon weren't that supportive of the book. It's good to know there's an alternative.

If you're just going to be there for a few days, the ST is adequate and has the most popular (which also means crowded) routes.

The Falkenstein falcon guide was recently updated, as of 1 or 2 years ago, and is much more current and has way, way more routes in it.

You really can't go wrong with either, but if you don't see yourself going to the meadows a lot, the ST is probably better. Just keep in mind that if your'e there in high season anything under 5.9 in the Supertopo is likely to have other parties. But if you are used to climbing at the gunks and standing in line to climb the place will probably seem deserted.

Thanks. I'll probably get the ST since I'm flying out Sat, but I will also check out the Falcon guide, too, once I'm there. I do plan on going back, so a more in-depth book would help.

I'm not a big crowd fan, but if you're saying the Gunks are busier then I'm sure I'll be fine. A little bit of east-coast knife-fighting skills never hurt anyone either. Tongue

I'd recommend getting both. They really compliment each other.

But, if your "hit list" only includes the stuff in the super taco book, then, you'd tend to want that, until you show up and have to wait in line, and you realize it sure would be nice to know what the cool looking uncrowded route right next to it is.

I find some of the crags a tad cornfusing (Stately Pleasure for example). The super topo book makes it a tad more efficient to understand which is where. Although, the latest falcon guide is much improved over previous editions.

Guys in the shop have beta on some of the neat new stuff nearby too, if you want to know some areas which are fun but way less crowded.

Cheers,
