I'll be heading out to Austin soon to do some climbing. I've heard so many great things about the climbing scene there but have never been able to check it out despite having visited many times. I'm quite familiar with the area and have the Austin Rock climbing book, but wanted to get some personal advise as to areas that are a must for me to check out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ryan

Ryan, Be sure to check out Erockonline.com. Post a message there and you should find someone to climb with. You can also find topos for Reimers Ranch here: http://sendaustin.wordpress.com/topos/ I recommend checking out Reimers. If you're going this time of year, go early and be ready to cook anyway. If you want to do some trad or slab climbing, Enchanted Rock is about an hour away from Austin. There's also good bouldering there. Again, be ready to bake in the sun... Good luck!

wrong time of year, first of all. furthermore, I do not think that any of the climbing in Central Texas is really destination material. Erock is fun, but I hope you are not making a trip just to climb there.

Thanks for the advice. Reimers Ranch is a place I've read a lot about so it's good to know that it is recommended by the locals. I'm certainly prepared for the heat, or as much as one can be, unfortunately this was the best time for me to take off work. How are the lakes right now for deep water soloing? Any recommendations there?

During the summer Pace Bend is the spot to be. Some good DWS and a hella of a lot of fun. The better climbing is tough to come by if you don't link up with the locals. They are normally out there on the weekend. There was an article about Pace Bend in a Rock and Ice a few months back. Look it up, you'll be psyched.

About Reimers: People love to talk about it, but it's still just a bunch of 30 foot, 4 bolt clip-ups. Seriously, if you've got another reason to be in Austin, it's fine, but I sure as hell would find a different state to travel to if it's your sole reason for taking the trip. Otherwise, I think you'll be sorely disappointed.

Also, check out bloody flapper. You can find water levels for Lake Travis and which areas are safe to climb during the current conditions.

Ryan: What dates did you plan on going to Austin area? Did you get to hook up with some folks? If not, touch base and I'm sure we can give you some beta, etc. It's true though that if you get to certain crags too late in the day, it's just TOO hot to climb, but there's plenty to play on in the shade also. -RockWoman
