Buy a set of stoppers/nuts and hike along the cliff and place alot of gear with your feet on the ground. Get someone who knows a good placement to check your work. Following experienced leaders is also good, just remember to pay attention to the placements before you clean them.

get a little of everything, some stoppers, hexes, tri-cams, TCUs, and cams. compare different styles, such as curved stoppers and hexes as opposed to the regular style. compare camalots to friends, etc.
