Well here we are again approaching the middle of the summer and the best climbing area in central New Mexico is closed again due to fire danger. The closure went into place this morning at 8am for The Sandia Ranger District. Here is the link to the closure map:
The thing that gets me upset is that they are keeping the crest road open as well as the tram, Sandia Ski area, and some picnic spots. It seems that if the fire danger was so bad the whole mountain should be closed. I think the biggest danger of a fire is going to come from some idiot driving to the top and throwing a cigarette out the window. If you are upset by this closure call Nancy Rose (505.346.3900) at the Cibola National Forest office. I think that it is important that they know that climbers and hikers think there policy is silly.
