Has anyone ever used one or know how it works? I've seen the picture on their website and can't figure it out.

looks like you clip the biner into the loop at one end, bring that end around your tree & clip it to the line. then somehow "clamp" it to your other tree and ratchet it tight.

Can somebody help me understand why you would by a slack line kit when you can just build your own with webbing and a few carabiners?

Its a complete waste of money.
In order to set it up you need to somehow get the end of the line into this stupid device and then cram some wedge shaped thing inside the first stupid device. Plus loosing it is a very hairy situation, if you grab the wrong spot then it can easily wreck your day.
Just buy:
4 carabeiners
2 Rappeling Rings
and 50 or so feet of webbing

I did get to use the Mammut set since posting this. I can't say I would recommend it to anyone either. The line is super static, the tensioning system made no sense. WAY too much money for something I'd prefer to do with basic webbing and biners.

Contrary to the other posts, I really like the thing. The setup is pretty simple if you understand the device, and it gives you a "reset" so you can get the line really nice and tight. just don't hold onto anything other than the lever when you release it. It may take a little more thought, but it is way better and more stable than the cheaper tow-strap type systems, and easier to tighten than a webbing/ biner system.
