Rappel device for long and fast rappels

Well, any tips? I know this 160 meter wall, 100 of which meters will be freehanging. I have a 200 meter static rope, and am considering trying it. I prefer not to melt my rope, so... can really fast rappels like this be done safely on a regular nylon rope? Which device is the best?

Um, is this a single line rappel? Why do you need to rappel quickly?

I've had bad experiences with even short raps on my ATC going too fast, so any slot device with teeth is probably out of the question. I haven't used an 8 since I was about 10 years old, but that seems like it would have less problems with friction (maybe not).
there's a device I think by ABC called a pyramid that you can flip around for less friction, and if your rope is narrow enough you should have even less friction- I think.
An auto-locking device might be nice if you are generating too much speed and want to stop without shredding your hand. I have never noticed my grigri generating a lot of heat on quick descents.
any particular reason you are looking for a speed record decent?

we did a 300' rap in one of the Zion canyons couple weeks ago, about half of it near-vertical, half overhanging, down two strands of a 700' static. belay devices can get hot fast, so don't go too fast. stay in control. don't stop either, and end up having a hot piece of metal lingering at any one spot on the rope. just descend smoothly and in control. we had ATC-Guide's, a B-52, and regualr ATC's. all raps went fine, fairly routine, just way long, which made it really cool

Thanks for replies!

ATCs and similar is out of the question, I know. And I've gotten burned myself by figure-8s from 20 meter rappels, so I guess they are a no-go also. The rack, I haven't even seen in use... maybe I should try that. Just need to buy one Unimpressed

As for why? For fun? Smile Reason enough for me.

I think you are slightly retarded for seeking out rappels, but here you go:

Spend some time on Gary Storricks site. He has almost every belay and rappel device made, has tried them all and has analysis and thoughts.

Whatever you choose... also use a "Fireman's Belay."

Other ways to backup the rappel... but this is the only one that you wont have to worry about another friction point.

like other's have suggested a rack is probably your best bet for a rap this long... try and find a stainless steel one, heavy but dissipates heat better and doesnt wear out as fast as AL ones and doesnt coat your rope in crap either. plus you going down not up so weight ain't an issue. as to speed, any faster than about 1m per second is gonna start generating some serious heat, even with a rack so if your gonna go faster than this be prepared for some mondo glazing!

fulton is right

rack is the best device for long rap. all other devices will over heat on fast rap.

Note that this technique can also save you money on a vasectomy.

Yeah, but you lose those savings when you have to be buried in two coffins.

note: real men use their balls to adjust decent speed while doing the method. Their massive surface area helps dissipate heat faster.

yes, but didn't need. as said, that long rap went fairly routine, and i had the device with the least friction. have done many long raps before with that. two of our party were familiar with that rap, and have already done it numerous times. and we weren't determined to fast rap, as the OP wants to here

Try using a rescue figure 8. It's big enough to dissipate the heat. That's what we use in the military beside the biner block.

Thanks, that's a useful link Smile

As for everyone questioning my sanity for seeking out rappels... No, I do not intend to drag 200 meters of static rope up those 250 meters, walking a few kilometers in the process, just for a rappel (and the following superfun jumar ascent...). There may be other reasons ;) The place is a giant cave, and things like pendulators or bungee jumps can be set up there. Even rappeling regularly is something people would pay to do, and here we are at the real issue .. Smile I'm fine with being a retard, though. It's funny.
