Kinda silly question but im curious about it. Graham, Sharma, Robinson, Pataxi, Ondra, Nicole etc... how do they pay the bills? is the sponsorship gear and shoe makers give them enough to go on? If they were football players at a comparable level to that they are climbing they would have been millionairs so I'm having a Hummmmmmmm???? moment as they obviously don't come across as particularly well off...

Most seem to earn a living from various sources. Writing articles (of varying... 'quality') or books, doing presentations, sponsorships and comps, coaching and instructing, etc. Some of these may not be major sources of income, but things add up. I'm not sure how much people make at the highest end of sponsorship directly from the sponsor alone. Still, I feel like in the majority of cases it's not really a full annum's income.

Sometimes I reckon they should release their own ranges, like in skating. Then I realise what a ridiculous idea that was. Most make moniez, as said before, from doing things on the side, though several famous climbers do have 9 to 5'ers (JP for one)

Sounds like Sharma is doing alright to me. Sharma has marketed himself pretty well, IMO. On the other hand, First Ascent pointed out Didier (sp?) doing custodial work at a hostel when he was trying Cobra Crack in Squamish. E11 addresses this topic a bit. In an interview, Dave Macleod's wife says that they live a bit frugally, and money from writing and coaching helps.

Some sell their old gear (that they got for free) on Ebay. Others sell weed.

i know pro surfers get paid when the stickers on their board are shown in mags. so i bet its the same sort of deal. anytime there is a pic of them in the mag wearing their sweet new optimus primes, they get a check from evolve. also, they get paid to be in the adds for evolves, to throw their names on products, and to do movies.

Carnage is right- it would have to be done in Evolv shoes. Current research proposes that a beanie would be just as necessary too.

Awesome?

The Caldwells have a house near Yosemite and in Estes Park so they must be doing pretty well.

Awesome? Um, what did you think they did before you found that out? Did you think the whole world just like gave them food + shelter because they're awesome climbers? Or perhaps they have full time jobs that allow them to travel around the world for extended periods of time whilst making no money! Do you think Tiger Woods whored himself out to Nike?

According to this article, Dean Potter made almost $50k per year from his sponsorship with patagonia alone. Given that climbers that are even more in the limelight, such as the names that you've mentioned, are likely worth even more, I would say it's pretty safe to assume they're doing fairly well.

On the side track here. It's never a bad time to bust out "The Onion" . Even if it has nothing to do with the thread like this. http://youtube.com/watch?v=gyGHHxUFY6w

Are you sure that doesn't include the kit they give him? Do you have a link?

The other day I was reading an old Rock & Ice article on Tori Allen. It said she made 100K in a year and a half through sponsorships and comp money.

So I live near the climbing center of the known universe, Boulder. Everyone knows that if you are a pro climber, you live in Boulder, if you move, you aren't pro anymore. Those are the rules. Anyway, I work in the hustle and bustle of nearby downtown Denver. Today at work I ran into Steph Davis holding a sign that said "Will Send for Food, God Bless, Veteran" I went and talked to her. We settled on $20 for a blowjob. I feel good that I've done my part to help keep pro climbers from working. Steph has more teeth in the photo's.
