LATE BREAKING NEWS

On Tuesday, July 15th, 2008 a sizable chunk of rock fell from Otter Cliffs. The rockfall happened overnight and there were no injuries or witnesses to the event. The rockfall happened in the Gallery area. The following are climbs that no longer exist:
  • Black Crack 5.7
  • Riptide 5.11+
  • Sharpen Up AKA Razor Crack 5.8

Climbers were on the affected climbs the previous day and fortunately the giant block didn't let loose while anyone was on it.

National Park Service personnel trundled the last remaining threatening boulder this morning. The newly exposed rock face is currently closed to climbing until further stability assessments are made, though climbs on either side of the fall are open.

Please use caution when lowering into the Gallery area as the recently fallen rock is still quite unstable.

[The RDB will be updated soon reflecting the changes.]

wow.. they took alot out.. this is the photo Shylo put up the other day on NEB.

Good news is that he says there should be one good hard line and a few moderates in the newly opened up space.

I was talking to both the NPS personnel and several guides. It looks like there will be 4 new routes once they let things settle and clean the rest of the debris from the rock.

I was up there this past weekend; the park service has removed the closure signs. It looked like someone was working the arete on the left, and I have no information regarding any FA's for the remaining section.

As stated previously, I assume that there is going to be four new climbs in this section. As seen in the photo: The arete on the left, the dihedral to the immediate right of the arete, the face in the middle, and a continuation of Black Crack to the new dihedral on the right. My climbing season is going to be cut short this year, but if I get the chance I'll probe around to get some information about this new section.
