"slightly used" "never been placed" etc. could also be used, but the person has obviously no knowledge of the kit. And if it IS her "brothers" kit, then why not the usual divvy it up between the friends? Anyways, if the story is true, then whatever, but TBH in this day and age, it's more likely to be stolen then anything else, and the money will probably go towards drugs. Valium, anyone?

I am confused. Majid, you contacted this specific craigslist poster and found out about her situation? Where do you live anyway? I don't care what you say, even if this specific craigslist poster is a nun raising money for her orphanage by selling donated climbing gear. When I see a suspect post I am going to inform the local community about it. Thats what I would want someone else to do if I were to have gear stolen.

He is telling us what "she" SAID her situation was. Stolen goods dealers always have an explaination, and based on the fact that their income relies on it, it'll be a good one, too.

I always assume that anyone I deal with is a scumbag and is selling stolen gear or is trying to cheat me. It doesn't matter if I am a jack-ass and insult honest folks on the internet. Thanks for the head-up. Dave

Puhleeez! Give it the benefit of the doubt. Besides, who buys climber gear other than climbers. Quick to treasure booty, but then automatically think that something like that ad is stolen. It just gets reused. Maybe it'll even find its way to you as booty.

You've been around this site long enough to know the rules. You sure as hell complain about others not following them enough.

majid_sabet wrote: what makes you to say "stolen gear " That whole statement makes it look stolen. Couple that with a good part of gear posted for sale is stolen its not really that bad of a suspicion.

To the OP, as someone who has had a backpack full 'o gear stolen a couple of years ago and never recovered, I appreciate posts like this - thank you. IMO, you are doing a service to the community. All of my gear has long since been replaced (and upgraded in some cases), and the junkie perp was caught, but I have some hope some day my old pack and gear will show up somewhere. Maybe when the thief gets out of prison (he was in trouble for much more than just breaking into my car and stealing my gear and other items), he'll be posting my stuff on Craigslist...

Why suspicious? Just curious.....perhaps someone is giving up climbing? Atho - I'd have to admit - if it were an ad that I had placed - I would have had more specifics - such as: 4 Ropes: 1 ea Bluewater 10.2 x 60m 1 ea Mammut Eiger 10.3 x 60 etc ???

Mainly because it's posted on a Canadian gear swap site, similar in style to Craigslist or Kijiji, where people post things and sell them locally. The seller is not in Canada, which is very unusual for the site. Secondly, the only photo features a bunch of slings, which are not easily identifiable, and most people would throw out instead of use. Of course, it is also possible that it is an inheritance, from a divorce, or a roommate who couldn't pay the rent on time.
