It's that time of year again - San Diego Mountain Rescue is looking for experienced backpackers/mountaineers who are 18 or older to join our team of professional search and rescue volunteers. Come in with basic backpacking and mountaineering skills and we'll teach you everything else you need to be an effective rescue member. You'll be expected to attend a reasonable percentage of field trainings (one weekend a month), as well as a couple of Wednesday evening classroom trainings and team meetings per month at the Mission Trails Visitor's center. Within a few months, you can be field qualified and be on-call to attend search and rescue operations when we're called out. The team was founded 41 years ago and currently works under an agreement with the San Diego County Sheriff's Dept. We average around 30 operations per year, ranging from urban searches for at-risk missing persons to type-1 alpine searches at high altitudes and in bad weather. Joining the team is a big financial and time committment. You'll be expected to purchase any necessary gear you don't already own and acquire a medical certification. Though we carpool whenever possible high fuel prices are also greatly increasing the cost of participating with the team. If you're interested and want to learn more, please come to our recruitment meeting on September 10th, 7pm at the Mission Trails Visitor's Center. More info... www.SDMRT.org An application form is available here: PDF Membership Application The recruitment flyer...
Hope to see you there. Adam

Good luck, and I hope you get a bunch of eager individuals responding to the call. Around here, volunteering has fallen off dramatically and us that are left are getting stretched thin, but none of us have any plans of retiring. I'm an optimist and believe this newer generation will pick up some slack. The rewards are great and the lessons and training are something that carries over to many of our leisure time passions. Time that we give comes back ten fold from others we have helped and in the form of personal achievement. Life's best experiences come from giving, and I hope you have many that want to live life to it's fullest by knocking on your door to give back to the community they live in.
