Most of Tahoe climbing is at a moderately high elevation. Late September is not going to be too hot to climb. Whereas October could be a bit cool, is far more likely to be wet, and will definitely have shorter days.

Exactly!
September is still good for tahoe areas. Octobers not too bad either. However, Octobers getting well into Valley season, and choosing Tahoe over the Valley would be a poor choice accept out of despiration.

Concur, September. It's also a game of averages - Sept could have lingering afternoon build-up but that's rare. Most years late Sept suffers the problem of dullness: brisk mornings, close to or below freezing each night at 10K, warm during the day with nary a cloud in the blue sky, the sunsets are gold - pure gold. Watching them its easy to believe magic.

October on the otherhand could be excellent as well. An indian-summer like thing usually sets in mid Oct... if; if that is winter doesn't set in first.

Some years, not many, but more than 'stormy Septembers' winter starts some time in Oct. Those first snows usually melt off at least once before winter in earnest, but sometimes not.

So for averages I think Sept is the safer 'one time' bet.
