Maybe it's just me but I find that there seem to be a lot of places to climb but there's never any directions to them. Could someone lend me a hand here? Where's is this punchbowl place at?

beethovenboy, the Punchbowl is out east of Palmdale. the guidebook should have a map or directions.

You are not stupid. People that enter areas on this site without any info or directions are lazy.

Thank you all for being empathetic to my situation. When I find my way out there I'll be sure to post precise directions for all interested. Thank you!

Jody,

We are not all "lazy"! Some of us assume you will either have a roadmap or a guidebook, and that you would never venture into an unkown climbing area armed with only the route descriptions listed here.

Many of the route sections and decriptions are helpful in choosing what routes an area has that are within one's abilities and fits their style. But by no means do I think this data base was ever intended to replace the guidebooks for the areas in question.

Dang it people, you are on the internet... If you can't locate a climbing area on your own and you need someone to lead you there by the hand, for heavens sake post a thread that says "will someone take me to..." "need partner who know their way around..."

I mean c'mon, the route section list a crag like;
Index Town Walls of Index
It's in the section "I-5 Corridor North"

Now if you can't get on the internet and find driving directions to Index, Wa from where you are you better not leave the house! Do you have any idea how much longer it would have taken me to put detailed driving directions to all of the nine areas I have entered into the database... I do I'd still be looking them up and typing and spellchecking them.

Thank you very much for putting up with my "rant d'jour", I didn't mean it as a personal attack on anyone! Otherwise lemme have it!

Jeff

Jeff, not to reciprocate any frustation or negativity, but it is disappointing to see that there's a supposed area to climb near my domicile and nobody has even put up scant directions. I'm always driving around looking for spots of my own and others and completely possess an explorative spirit however, some of us need some kind of direction, as vague as they may be. Stay kewl, man...

Beethovenboy:

Patience my young Padawon I will add directions and more info in time. I, just like you and everyone else, contribute when I can.

All work, no play, makes Jack a dull boy

However, with that in mind, and your appearent frustration, I will add the info ASAP

OK Done. Directions are In. Attitude Wall is In. Lil Attitude Wall is in.

I will add more info later, but that should get you going for now!

Just realize that DP (Devil's Punchbowl) is a complicated area because of the myriad of formations and trails. You best bet is to buy (or at least take a sneak peak) at the Troy Mayr SoCal Sport Climbing Guide to help get you lined up.

Even with the guide, your more than likely to get lost a few times (I know I did heheh )

Amazing!!! There is a guidebook which could have been purchased, with driving directions!?!

Or Aaron, who is a hella nice guy, and has flooded me with beta when I have asked for it, could have been PMed for help.

I am sorry if my personal issues with people not being able to find crags obnubilated my previous post, but I was not intending it as personal as I stated above.

Oh yeah, one more thing, could you please tell me what "obnubilated" means? Sounds like a pretty awesome word and I would hate to sound bombastic using it. The latest kewl word I've come across lately is "calumniate" which means to spread lies about someone.

Beethovenboy; Actually, unlike Krustyklimber, some of us prefer to venture into unknown climbing areas (or better yet, areas never before climbed) armed with nothing but climbing gear, water & a headlamp. I can't count the number of times I've gone into an area with no guide @ all & just climbed something that looks doable.

Many of the areas (like in Germany) I've found references to on the internet & just drove to the town mentioned & asked @ the local store, gas station, whatever, "Is there any rockclimbing around here?" Adds a bit of the traditional to an otherwise overly commercialized sport.

Obnubilated means obscured or hidden by clouds.

Hey, my buddy was out at Devil's Punchbowl last Sunday and said it was closed as part of the Angeles National Forest fire closure. So you might want to check it before you head out there.

The first significant storm of the season is supposed to hit California this Thurs-Sat. This being the case, the FS should be opening the Angeles NF back up for rec activity, as well as other FS closures in SoCal.

Here's the phone number for Devil's Punchbowl- 661-944-2743. They should be able to tell you if they are open.
