Went in yesterday, parked OUTSIDE the gate, off the road, and hiked in, but got this note on the car, from Weyerhaeser. "You are trespassing. Sign says keep out. That means you too. We are in fire season and are closed to all access... Hunter's and Recreational Access Hot Line Number Toll Free 1-888-741-5403". I called it, and the message gives detailed info for each region of their property, which at this time is apparently closed to all access.

It sounds like the Forest Service and BLM will also be going to a higher level of fire closure soon. Access to climbing areas will remain open but remote campfires will be restricted. Camp stoves will be OK.

Usually when the Callahans close for fire season, the fire closure stays in effect until we get rain usually (late Sept to early Oct) at which time they will also keep the gates open on weekends so you can drive to the top. Gates generally will remain open until about the middle of March.

For now this is a good time to visit some of the more remote areas such as the Acker, McKinley, Old Man, Redmans Tooth, Menagerie, and Rattlesnake (Rogue)

An update on other recent fire closures in the Umpqua area of Western Oregon.

ROSEBURG, OR August 14, 2008 High fire danger prompts officials to announce that public-use restrictions on campfires will go into effect for the Umpqua National Forest on Monday, August 18.

Public-use restrictions prohibit tending or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire outside of developed recreation sites such as campgrounds, lookouts and trailheads. Liquefied and bottle gas stoves and heaters may be used for cooking and heating.

Under the restrictions, motorized travel off developed Forest roads and trails is not allowed, except for the purpose of going to and from a campsite located within 300 feet of the adjacent open developed road.

For more information, including a list of the designated recreation sites where campfires are permitted, visit www.fs.fed.us/r6/umpqua or call 541-672-6601.
