Anyone know who went through the PA side of DWG with a chainsaw? Judging by the brown but not yet dropped leaves on the trees that were cut down that I saw this afternoon, it looks like it was done sometime in the last 2 or 3 weeks. Much as I appreciate not having to go around/over/under things, kindly refrain from doing such large and obvious 'maintenance' in DWG while I'm trying to get NPS approval for a sanctioned trail day (see this thread). All trail maintenance at DWG is required to be approved by the NPS and its hard to get their buy-in to fixing the issues with the trail when they see people taking matters into their own hands and making major changes. Ranger Carawan has been really helpful with trying to make the trail day happen, but this is the sort of thing that could easily torpedo it. On a side note, whoever did it was perhaps a bit overzealous with the chainsaw.... trees not in the way of the trail or downslope and leaning away from the trail were all cut down. Not good. -aric.

That sounds like pretty conclusive evidence that the NPS should get off their ass and approve the trail day.
