I went climbing this past weekend and at the face there were hardly any trees or anything it was sooo bare that you could park your car at the edge of the face, the first thing i noticed was that the only other climbers there were using the trailor hitch on their SUV and an Top anchor, now i really didn't think that was that safe but i am interested to hear what everyone else thinks.....

Did they have a block under one of the wheels? I would probably trust that better than a tree I don't know much about. Without a wheel block, I wouldn't trust the parking brake on the truck.
Not sure this is the preferred method, but I'd probably do it if I had no other option.

I wouldn't trust my old truck's parking brake alone; but if I were forced to use my truck as an anchor, you can bet I'd block all 4 tires. I'd definitely do it then, though.

Just my thoughts.

I think there is a story of this sort in an old issue of Climbing. It was a story of something that did not go well. If I recall correctly, they gave the impression that it is okay as long as you block the tires.

Yeah just chock the tires.

I was studying for my pilot's license over the summer and one day I forgot to remove the chocks in front of the airplane's tires. It took full throttle to get the plane to go over the chocks, which is a lot of force.

Relate that to the forces generated during TR falls and I think you'll agree that achoring to a vehicle in this manner is safe.

I'd do it for sure. Just a couple rocks or logs will work just fine. I would probably even do it with just the parking and emergency brakes on. An SUV is not gonna move on just body weight when the brakes are locked. That would really suck if you forgot to put them on though. Belayer says "lookout!" and you look up in time to glimpse your car coming over the cliff....

Those trailer hitches aren't exactly reliable. If your going to use a vehicle as an anchor, tie your anchor to the chasity, or through the wheel or something, but not hitch. I've seen to many of those break off when they shouldn't have.

Just play it safe always.

one anchor to each side of the rear axle and one to the frame. then block the 4 tires and id do it...a TR generates very low fall factors....

I don't think I would do it with a nice car without a good car alarm, though.

I would hate to have somone trying to steal my anchor.

Oh, and I wouldn't park it in the sand if there is much of a slope.

Could you park sideways to the cliff? No chocks needed, and you'd never pull it off the edge.
Plus, if someone moved your car, you'd just move to next route.

You think the SUV anchor is bad? I saw a guy tied off to a train track -- an ACTIVE train track. At least it was not part of an top anchor system, just an anchor for the toprope belayer.

Even with the car facing perpendicular to the climb, I would still block the tires. The car could still roll off to the side.

I'd say, as many have before, block the tires...the parking break on my father's Bronco gave out once while simply being parked on our slanted driveway. Away it rolled, across the street, and into the ravine...crash.

But yeah...it would be funny if your anchor drove off. Especially if you were still climbing. Up you go....
