Just a warning. If you plan to climb Fear Factor on the Long Slab, the climb now has a dangerous run out due to rock fall. Apparently a large chunk of rock which included a bolt, fell off the climb, Climb at your own risk.

haha i thought that you were talking about the TV show when i saw the title. Too bad about the rout though. Like the post above, was there an accident, or just rockfall? is moresimilar rockfall likely?

NO accident. The rock just fell. I don't think anyone was around. PS...Don't forget about the Climb and Clean Sept 26th-28th!

Had anyone ever fallen on that bolt? I don't see how it could have held a fall if the block fell off on it's own. Kinda scary no?

I lead the route, didn't fall at that bolt. Yeah, it's super scary. Actually, I don't really go over there any more, there is too much loose rock for my taste. I know plenty of people climb there, but, there is so much cleaner terrain to climb.

If their was a bolt on the block and the block fell off, I would hope that something big would have had to happen to make it fall. Otherwise thats a very bad bolt job, right?

Perhaps. It depends on how loose the cliff is and how big the block was. Odd that it came off in the middle of summer. Most large rockfall happens with freeze thaw.

This particular section of the climbing wall is perpetually being cleaned. Haven't climbed the giant wall without without chunks of choss dislodging.

I was in the area Sunday (I haven't gone to the big wall since I took most of the rocks off the first time I tried) and heard a lot of rock fall. There were two or three times I recall, but they ended with splashed. I figured kids were rolling/throwing rocks in the water but maybe it was a clean up ;)

I'm thinking the climb has always been X-rated, but nobody fell on that bolt to find out.

It would be interesting to know what made the rock fall off. Since the route was bolted not too long ago, I wonder how it held up to drilling, and looked solid enough to drill in the first place. Then a few months later just fell off?

I think it is just a matter of the "quarry" aspect of the area, blasting and such. What might look solid could be a potential time bomb. This is a relatively newer route, so it is not surprising that the loose stuff is still being discovered. I would have to say the bolts are solid. Ted does a great job keeping the place protected.

Quarries aren't meant to be climbed.

I do agree though, Ted has done a great job with keeping Birdsboro safe. I can't see him sinking bolts into questionable rock. Did Ted put the route up, or was it someone else's?

The majority of the long slabs area is full of awful rock fall just waiting to happen. It's probably a big part of why Birdsboro still has a reputation of being choss. Sure, rocks will fall on you at any crag in this little place, but not more than once or twice per climb. But at the long slabs? Forget a helmet, just belay from above.
