Weyerhaeuser has lifted the fire closure to the Callahans. Access to the McKinley Rock Trailhead is also open on the Umpqua. The trail into the Peregrine Traverse at Acker Rock has recently been reflagged. Usually sometime Sept. or October the upper and lower gates at the Callahans remain open Sat. and Sun. on weekends through the middle of March allowing you to drive into trailheads on top. Thank you very much for posting this info. A question about the lower gate: do they leave it open ALL weekend? i.e., if we drive through on Saturday and don't head out until the evening, is there a chance that they'll have the gate closed and we'll be stuck?

It sounds like the gates may be open the first week of October. Last year it seemed like they were leaving the upper gate open all the time but closed the lower gate in the evenings. If you are planning on camping leave through the upper gate and find a pullout north of the gate for free or pay to camp at River Forks or Amaker (sp?) Park.
