I'll be back in the park Sept. 16-20 and want to do one of the classic alpine moderates. I have attempted Sharkstooth before but got rained off--so I have a hankering to do that again. My buddy has never been to RMNP before so I'd kind of like to get him on top of Long's via a moderate route. However, it looks like there is more real climbing on Spearhead--8 pitches or so, and I've heard wonderful things. Any advice? What would you do? I don't have time to even do two of them--four days only and I want to climb at Lumpy and Eldo.

I assume you're talking about the North Ridge of the Spearhead (5.6)? Thats a great route, lots of fun low fifth class with a couple of great fairly exposed 5.6 pitches. More fun than the Sharkstooth in my opinion. Havent done the Keyhole Ridge.

Yes. North Ridge. I've led some mult-pitch 5.7's out east and have lead some 5.8s after preview on tope rope but don't want to get in over my head. 5.6 alpine is about perfect for me.

My personal opinion is that the Sharkstooth route is more fun than either of the two routes you mention. The Spearhead route is good, but is it mostly 4th class ground/low 5th class with a little bit of climbing mixed in. It is less commiting than the Sharkstooth route, which may be a real consideration if you are a 5.7 leader. The Keyhole ridge is a whole lot of hiking for just a couple pitches of climbing. Don't get me wrong, climbing up Long's by any means is a great experience, but I fele like if I'm going to do a lot of hiking, then hike to the top. If I am going to climb it, then do a route that actually has a lot of climbing. Just my opinion....hope it helps
