we had a debate about when to retire a piece of webbing. does anybody have any clue when to retire it?

Sorry, guys, was sleepin' on duty again - got ya moved.
Adam's right, look for frays, cuts and extreme discoloration from exposure. These are tell-tale signs that webbing's seen its last days of climbing.

Really, when it is fuzzy, or has taken a million falls on it, or it is comming undone. Genereally, if you use it quite a bit you should replace it once a season, considering a few webolettes or cordalettes cost less then an average quality camming unit.

Webbing has a shelf life, just as ropes do, so, considering how inexpensive it is to replace it, I'd suggest that you make note of the date of your purchase, and commit to a date of 2 years, maybe, depending on how heavy you use it. Hopefully you already know that sunlight also degrades webbing, too. Play it safe, and conservatively with yours and others' lives.
