It looks like two of the better climbing areas near Santa Barbara have been burned by the Gap Fire. See the map here: http://www.independent.com/news/2008/jul/03/independent-fire-map-online/ For those of you that have climbed here this is a huge loss to the community in this area. I just hope it doesn't make it down to the houses below

Does anyone know the status of the Playground (or the Yard for that matter) at this point? Did the fire do significant permanent damage? Are either of these areas climbable right now? What about Fire Crags and the Mouth?

So here's some updated info on the climbing areas mentioned. The Gap fore burned near the Brickyard, Playground and Lizards Mouth. I've been to Brickyard and lizards mouth and with the exception of a few burned trees the areas are intact. From what I could tell none of the routes at the brickyard were badly burned and it actually cleared out some annoying brush. Lizards mouth is essentially the same. I haven't been there but I heard the playground, at least the Lebowski area, is dirty but in good shape. Almost the whole trail, however, was burned. These areas were open until Wednesday when an aerial hydro mulching project began. Read about it here: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/lospadres/news/2008/09-22-hydromulch.shtml A forest service person told me on Wednesday that west Camino Cielo, and all areas off the road, will be closed for a month while this aerial assault takes place. Some sensitive areas may be closed for a year. That's the deal for now. Painted cave and the fire crags were unaffected. -Kfox
