OK... Sitting at work yesterday and get the call to go to HR VPs office. Tells me this is the worst part of his job (like I care), that they are eliminating my department and that I am being let go after 6 years of "excellent service." After about 15 minutes of this stuffed suit telling me how great I am, how sorry he is and how bad the company is doing, I am given an average severance package and sent out the door. GREAT! Thanks for 6 years... and by the way, if we are doing so bad WTF is the CEO doing having offsite meetings with Senior Leadership in a $600 / night / room hotel and paying a film company well into 6 figures to produce a documentary on the history of the company??? Corporate greed and incompetence make me sick! So, now that I do not have a job, and since the wife has a flexible schedule, we are going to burn some frequent flier miles and go to EPC! (correction - first 2 weeks at the Red, THEN EPC) This will be our first trip to climb in Mexico. I have read a bunch of the existing posts on EPC, but thought I would reach out to the community here for any additional insights or advice we should follow. We are solid 5.9 leaders (and can "fall up" most 5.10s) so moderate route suggestions would be appreciated. Also, any comments on the weather in early October would be great. Thanks in advance for your help in planning my trip!

Potrero is exactly the place I would go if I were in your shoes...I haven't been in about 7 years, but I remember it as a great place to clear your head. I don't recall the particulars, but there are a shit load of moderate routes in the 10 range. Good luck and enjoy.

Supposedly there is shame associated with your situation. Why is it, then, that I feel envy? Tell us what's it's like...on the other side. How does it feel to freefall through the expectations? Enjoy!

EPC is just plain fun. Lots of great multipitch clips ups to enjoy. I'd recommend Space boys, uber classic. Its in the mid 10 range but I figure after 2 weeks in the Red you should be able to handle it. I have not been in EPC in October but I was there in July and was able to climb. The trick is too wake up early, climb till mid morning, take a siesta and then climb again. There are some great pools that are open during the summer. If you're lucky, they'll still be open. Throw together 2 videos from my time in EPC, check em out: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...trero_Chico_149.html http://www.rockclimbing.com/...ial_Omnibus_773.html

congrats! If you are a solid 5.9 leader in NC, then you should be able to do all the multipitches up to .10+. think "vacation grades."

Congratulations!! Being fired was the best thing that ever happened to me. Get your unemployment checks flowing and you'll be able to spend the whole winter down here on the cheap. You are probably planning to camp but if you are interested in a private casita let me know and I can hook you up. There are lots of moderate routes here of all lengths--just make sure you have plenty of rubber on your shoes. The rock here eats rubber.

Thank you for all the replies. Less than 48 hours after losing my job, I am still slightly in shock. However, not nearly as stressed as I thought that I would be. The "unknown" future is a little daunting, but I am trying to focus on the fact that I have limitless possibilities and can a great opportunity to make changes! Will start looking into exact dates for the trip and reservations next week. The more I read on EPC, the more excited I get!
