My wife told me that "some guy" told her that a river, some where in eastern NC, has been diverted/drained leaving a nice gorge. Is this "guy" serious or was he just hitting on my wife ;)?

I doubt it. I'm into rivers and spend most of my time paddling NC's gorges, and if you go about 40 miles east of me, there are no more "gorges". The Appalachian escarpment is the end of the gorges area. Now, that said, he might be right that some river is drained, leaving some small boulders, but that's it. On the other hand, it's been two dry years and many of our rivers in NC feel drained. Not saying he was hitting on your wife, but if it was Eastern NC, he's very mistaken. There are plenty of dewatered gorges in Western NC, but that's a whole other story and one that involves hydro projects. Geoff
