Across from West Point there is a very large natural wall rising above the railroad tracks and along the river. Any beta???

Are you referring to the south face of break neck ridge? I've always wondered about that too.

You live in that area? My family is at West Point. I'll be going there for the holiday season. I'd be interested in scoping it out with rope and rack if you're interested.

There is a story, perhaps apocraphal, that Fritz Wiesner was climbing at Breakneck with a group from NY when, far in the distance, he spotted the light reflecting from the Gunks. On a subsequent weekend he travelled up there in search of the cliffs, walked in to Millbrook, and Gunks climbing was born.

So, that strongly implies that there are climbs on Breakneck.

I understood he was hiking the ridge, which is one of the most popular hikes in the north east.

My understanding, while living there from 2002-2005 is that climbing is prohibited there. You are talking about the wall just above the train tunnel, right?

There is some other climbing in the area but nothing that big (that I'm aware of).

You are correct. No climbing on that great rock along the Hudson.

"An oft-told legend of American rock climbing concerns that brilliantly clear moment following an afternoon thundershower when Fritz Weissner and his party topped out on Breakneck Ridge, gazed off to the northwest and saw...the future of northeastern rock climbing." -Yankee Rock & Ice

Not that this adds anything new to the conversation, but at least it's poetic and published hearsay ;)

There is a lot of nice climbing in the hudson valley, and some of it has bolts from the last couple decades, implying someone is up to something up there. Which would make sense when Mohonk is such a zoo-fest on weekends. Rock climbing is not a crime! They're in it with the aliens. We can't climb along the Husdon river because they're building landing strips for gay martians. I swear to God Stuart...

Someone's got it. I saw a guy up there a decade ago before I knew climbing was a thing.
