pee like a man

On long multi-pitch routes, how do I go to the bathroom when I can't really take my harness off? Oftentimes I end up drinking way too little because of that.

I have heard of a plastic thing for this purpose that works like a funnel, so you don't need to take your pants or harness off. Just like a man. In principle it sounds great, but I can't get myself to really like the idea.

does anyone have experience or comments on that?

The item you are looking for is called freshette.

I have no personal experience with one. But I don't think I would hesitate to use one if the situation warranted it.

get a harness with drop leg loops. you unfasten the straps that connect your leg loops from the back of your harness, and squat. try not to pee on your pants. you are still tied into the weight bearing parts of your harness.

alternately, get a funnel. or pee into a wide-mouthed bottled snug up against your cooter, and then dump it.

i think there is also another funnel named "lady J"?

I've used freshette during my Denali climb. It takes some practice. I used it to pee in a bottle in a tent. Another woman uses it all the time with harness on, peeing like a guy.

I will recommend it.

I have another friend who told me she was having problems with the freshette, I don't get it. You wiggle it into place, assume your stance and go. I guess I've never had a problem, but obviously some do.

That said I've only ever used it when out ice climbing when its too cold to drop your pants and struggle with your layers (yes, with a harness on, its not been a problem), or in my tent at night with my pee bottle. Otherwise I tend to just make use to the drop straps on my harness.

I did a 23 pitch climb with hanging belays and peed 7 times while inroute.

So...here is how I pee with my harness on. Please note that this technique probably only works with stretchy, yoga style pants. I reach between my legs, (harness on, leg loops still connected), grab the back of my pants and pull them down and forward. I pull them far enough so that I can pee without actually hitting my clothing...works like a charm every time.

thanks for your replies and sorry that I did not search for similar threads. I didn't know how the thing is called.

another issue is that I live in Europe so there are WAY more people around. Most of the time the next rope team is just below you, and there are people on the neighboring routes. So the problem is not so much the lack of ledges, but of privacy.

Maybe I just need to improve tremendously so the average climber can't keep up with me, or start going out in the rain.

Using the shewee or squatting use a pee bottle on big wall. I have had an unfortunate Updraft situation that left my partner smelling like piss for the next few days.

Pee like a woman ...

This tool is the bomb:
http://www.kristascups.com/

the 'p-style'

I use it hiking, day cragging and used it on 3rd flatiron 6 pitches up. I like a little privacy... no exposure with this funnel. A little more tricky in winter, b/c layers; solve by wearing mens long underwear.
Small and easy to carry in a thin sock, in carhartts or extra backpack pocket.

I heart zip crotches in my long underwear. Men's just get kinda weird and bunchy.

I have these:

I want these:

I am thinking of trying to find someone who'll put a zipper in my fleece pants. And of course my bibs have a generous crotch zip too.....essential!

I have a pair of marmot long-johns that have a boy-style overlap flap kind of dealio positioned appropriately for girl anatomy. They call this innovation a "bomb bay crotch", and it eliminates the zipper-on-privates problem.

OK I just HAVE to ask.

As far as under garments? Is it a none thing or a pull to one side thing?

They ARE undergarments...just long ones.

Honestly though, it's not a big deal to drop non-technical trou w/ your harness and leg loops in place. Just aim appropriately.

In addition, I haven't found the fine zippers on those really bothered me except on a couple of occations, and I'll blame that one excessive layering and that my bibs are actually men's and too tight across the hips (hey, gortex bibs are pricey, and a men's small is a lot easier to find on sale than women's pants period). I actually think it was the beefier zipper on the bibs than the long underwear, and there was probobly the addition of being lowered/rappeling and the harness bringing everything closer into my body too.

I've worn the same mid-weight long-johns out rock climbing and haven't had a problem. The zipper is fine enough that I don't notice it, but I do wear regular underwear most of the time too.

Yeah, that's what I usually do on the ground or ledge is pull the straps through my legs to hold my pants out of the way.
But I sure wished I had a freshette recently while sharing a hanging belay on a windy day.

Fortunately we were alone on the route and fortunately my poor hubby actually found it really funny when he got splattered on. After all, it's safety first - better I go so I can actually focus on belaying him through the crux pitch. Smile
