I have personally found the rock in the Gunks to be extremely sound over the last 30 years. Of course, 30 years isn't very long, geologically speaking, and all that talus beneath the Trapps got there some how.

That's why this huge(for us) rockfall was such big news. It was, from what I understand, a section of roof that spanned about 40 feet in length, and at least 6 feet in height.
If anyone heard "the rockfall" this afternoon (around noon) in the same area..... it was a false alarm. hahahah
We were doing trailwork and had chained up a rock of about 500 lbs. But as we started liftig it, the part that was buried tilted a neighbor rock and it start to go!
Luckily, once we stopped the work, the rock stopped too. But, it was very precarious(and we knew we couldn't get the one we'd wanted without letting it go.....), so, we sent someone down to the carriage road to make sure nobody was around and - well, nothing like the sight of a 500 lber rolling down the talus slope!
It made some good noise, and ended up stopping right at the edge of the carriage road(talus side). Perfect placement!
FYI - we finished the steps on the trail that goes to Shockley's today. It was the last day for our crew this season. This year we redid the trails on Welcome to the Gunks, Minty(that's a beauty, like a mini stairmaster) and now this one. Probably somewhere around 500 man hours work!

It's our pleasure, of course, and makes our visits to the preserve that much more memorable, remembering the days we spent on a section as we go through on our way to get on something.
Just got the email our crew leader(Dick Williams) sends out each week in season. This was, as you know, the "wrap up" one for the year, and he recounted the work his team has done over the years. Here's what he's recorded:
"...finished Welcome to the Gunks trail (220 MH's), Minty Trail (328 MH's) and yesterday we finished the Shockley's Trail (94 MH's) with a total MH's of 642 for the season.
Since I started to keep records of Trail Work MH's in 2002, we have put in 3,235 MH's. 2002=162, 2003=609, 2004=513, 2005=366, 2006=442, 2007=501, 2008=642."
People interested in volunteering next year - we start usually around the end of April or the first week in March. We meet atop the steel bridge on Sundays at 9am, or ask one of the rangers where we are at.
FYI - We did not do any of the repair work for the damage from the rockfall TigerLilly made the thread about. The preserve cleaned up all that debris and repaired the carriage road.

Thanks, Jay. I only started in the end of 2005, though.
At that time, they were working on the area in the Nears by White Pillar. On like my second day there, Dick's got this idea on how to move a boulder that is about as big as a Shetland Pony.
The problem was that there were no trres to hook the griphoist to on one end. But as we all know, plenty of deep horizontal cracks.... He has brought along some old bootied cams which he is going to anchor the thing to the cliff.
He tells us all "Make SURE to stay out of the Death Triangle(the area between the rock and the anchors) because these things could blow and...well, you would die." Or something like that.
Of course, they DID blow. Luckily nobody was near by as the cam popped out of that crack like Paul Bunyon whipping on a black alien....
