Hola!! I'm gonna be in Patagonia in January/2009, and I'm thinking if I should bring with me my quickdraws and rope. What should I do?? Is there any good sport climbing crag near Chalten or Calafate?? Maybe in Chile, Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales? Unfortunately, I haven't learned proper gear placement before, and I'm not willing to learn it on Fitz Roy.. Not that stupid!! Thanks a lot marcos brazil

Thanks a lot marcos brazil O.k. i cant tell you what the name of the wall is but I know there IS some sport climbing right near El Chalten. When I was there, I talked to some of the locals about it at a pub. Sport climbing right near town. I think its a drive or a long hike from town. Also Ive heard about some bouldering around town, but talk to the locals when you get there. There is one particular pub/restaurant with a climbing wall outside of the place, this is where I met two sport climbing locals. Have fun!

turtle54 - where did you end up climbing? I'm going to head down to that region December 2009 or January 2010 and trying to plan that around hiking in Patagonia. Thanks.

Besides El Chalten, there is a place in northern Patagonia called Valle Encantado. It's about one hour out of Bariloche. It's mostly single-pitch sport with a few two or three-pitch routes. The landscape is beautiful and the weather is perfect in the summer, the climbing is decent (lots of pockets and features with good friction). It would be excellent if it wasn't for the rock quality (a bit crumbly, especially on newer routes). Definitely worth a couple of days if you are in the Bariloche area, even if you don't climb.

tammyvh !! There are tons of climbing in Patagonia..Depends on where you're going. I stayed 10 days in Chalten, and sure can tell you there's a lot of climbing there.. Trad, sport and bouldering. There's a guide book with the routes, you can buy it from every outdoor gear shop... Theres some climbing in El Calafate too, but i didnt climb there. I met some guys from Ushuaia, who told the there's good sport and trad in Tierra del fuego.. In Chile, Puerto Natales has some boulders/sport. Couldn't get information there, but theres rock everywhere. On northern Patagonia, theres bariloche and the Valle Encantado, known to be the best sport crag in South America. Near Esquel, theres Bruitera and Piedra Parada. In chile, Cochamo is south america answer to Yosemite... hope that can help you... cheers m.
