Does the Home Page look terrible to you?

On 11/25, I made some pretty crazy changes to the home page, to get more articles and gear reviews above the fold. But because of the dynamic, self-resizing nature of the website, it may have screwed up a lot for some folks.

Here's what the home page currently looks like to me:

I'm using Firefox (3.0.4) on a 12" screen. My screen resolution is 1440x900. Does it look radically -- I'm talking unusably -- different for you? If so, please post a screen shot here, plus your browser (and version if you know it), screen size and screen resolution.

Thanks for your help! I apologize profusely if you've been kinda frustrated. I'm gonna work to fix this ASAP.

Jay

Will you take a screen shot for me? What's your browser and such?

My layout looks the same as yours on firefox and safari on several different macs at several different resolutions, so it's working from a technical standpoint.

Personally, I'd like an option to switch things and put the "forum discussions" section up top. The recent articles don't change very often, but the latest forum posts do, so it makes sense to put the most dynamic, constantly changing, stuff at the top where it's easily seen.

What Binrat sees is what I see (though I can't be sure what happens below the fold, but I'm sure it is the same).

edit: I use explorer 6.02 and work won't allow me to upgrade to 7.0 due to some security issues with it.

edit2: 17" screen with 1280X1024 resolution

I'm not saying no to this, but I am saying probably not right now. Unsure

When did this start for you guys? Greg you mentioned a month ago in your PM, I think, but the changes only went into affect 9 days ago. (Granted, we were working on them much earlier, but that shouldn't have had any effect.)

Nine days, a month - who's counting.

^ So we can assume your tales of 50 feet ripper whips are more actually falling from gear at your waste, and the ripped pieced...in reality....flew from your hands as you slipped just as about to slot it, bonking your belayer on the head?

(kidding)

My screen looks the same as J_ung's. But I have Firefox. Don't know the other information.

Yes, this site needs to be fixed up. Move the Forums up. I mean, why the hell would you put the most updated information at the BOTTOM of the page?

Also improve the route searching features, I hate navigating through the menus. A google map with climbing areas on it would be AWESOME, get to work.

The front page looks very good on Firefox 3, and the current versions of Opera and Konqueror (all on Linux), on computers I've used with screen sizes ranging from tiny laptop screens to humongous ones on university research computers.

I agree, I posted a comment about this (scrolling down to see the "recent posts") last week in the Suggestions forum. I understand Jay's intentions but it seems sensible to put the more utilized sections (forums and database) at the top.

I hear you dlintz. I''m already thinking of ways to make this happen, without killing the progress I just made on the editorial stuff. Article traffic just doubled, though a lot of that has to do with more regular new content, too. I really don't want to lose that, but I'm not deaf when it comes to what people want to see, either. Bear with me folks! Smile

Aye aye, sir. Wink

Don't you worry. The route data base has an awful lot in store for it.

Mine looks like yours (screens, that is), and I'm on a MacBook Pro with Safari. And I agree with Valarc and debaser. Forums (newest news) above the fold.

Looks fine for me. At least on FF3 and opera9,6. Lynx however does not seem to like the site. All on a 10.4.11 12" ibook.
Maybe its a widescreen thing?

My screen also looks just like yours does, but i (along with several others it seems) would also like to see the recent forums at the top of the page.

....what about making the front page be something people can actually manipulate personally? The way Blogger sets up their blogs, and a few other sites(though I can't recall which off the top of my head right now) make the various sections movable.

The user can drag and drop, and delete unwanted sections. Of course, ALL the options are listed in a sidebar(or at the bottom, or linked via a "design page" that shows them all....

Even go so far as to allow for BIG, Medium, or Small, or versions of each module, or even just labels/icons to designate.... Mine would have the photo BIG and centered. I'd have the J-ung featured articles up there too. The route database would be an icon - I don't need to see the map.... And the Forum would be an icon for me too, because I don't use the "what's new" thing. I just open the whole page, and choose what i want to look at.

iGoogle is a good example of a personal portal that allows the user to manipulate and move content around rather freely. Being able to do something similar on rc.com would be pretty nifty.

Apologies for the drift. Back on topic... now. I find the site usable, but not particularly aesthetic.
