I am flying out to seattle for thanksgiving and planning on climbing in one of the gyms out there. Needless to say, I would prefer to bring everything I will need (except the rope) rather than rent.
When I flew a month or so after 9/11, I got a toy biner confiscated at ONE (only one, it got through three other airports before that) airport, and none of the others bothered me.
I would prefer to not have my ATC & HMS 'biner confiscated if I can avoid it.
Anyone have any problems flying with 'biners lately?

No problems. I've been flying with gear quite often lately, and had no trouble. When it's just been a couple biners, they haven't even stopped me. When I tried to send my entire lead rack through in my carry-on (17 cams, 15 nuts, set of hexes, a few small tricams, 50-ish biners, nut tool, etc) they were somewhat less than pleased and searched my bag, but after explaining what it was all for, they let me through, but they insisted upon excorting me to the gate and having that bagged checked and put underneath. I believe it was the nut tool that was a problem. Not a big deal really, though.
What justification did they give you for confiscating the biner? I think that's a load of crap, and you should have insisted that they pay you for it, or at least mail in back to your home address.

I've been thinking about this too since I'm heading to Chi-town for Turkey day. I'll probably just leave mine home as it would cost more to replace them than the $3 to rent them. However if I end up checking stuff anyway I'll just toss them in that bag.

As long as it's checked, it doesn't matter. I wouldn't carry it on though, because some places don't like that, even though others let you through. I brought my gear down to montana and back this summer, and had no problems.

I don't see why you need to carry it on in the first place. You won't be using your gear on the plane. Or will you? In any case just check it and forget it. Put a lock on your bag and you will be fine.

I carried my full rack on the plane several times this past summer. I through a climbing magazine on top in case I got someone who was clueless and needed an explanation. I didn't need it and did not have any problems, however.

I made a beeping noise as I walked though the metal detector and securaty searched me. I was 10 and thought I was funny. But a cam would to be look like a weapon of mass destruction.

I have carried mine onboard a few times since 9-11 and never had any problems. What did they security think you were going to us a keychain carabiner for anyways? Wait I know, you could clip it to the pilots nose and drag him to the back of the plane!!! Just playing! Nobody take me seriously!

yes, why a toy biner??? i could understand if it was a regular one, usable at leas as brass knuckles, but why toy. maybe the redneck liked it because he didnt see one before?!? and then showed it to his wife: look b**ch this thing is the exact opposide of your mouth, you try to open it and it closes, but i keep trying to close your mouth and still can not do it without breakin your jaw.

They confiscated it in detroit because 'it could be used as a brass knuckle'. Yes folks, a 9 gram $.99 toy beaner can be a weapon of fear and intimidation! (ignore the fact it would break your hand if you actually hit something with it, and it only fit over like 3 of my fingers anyways )
I didn't bother making a fuss as I was gonna be late for my flight, and it wasn't worth the 99c.

If you don't mind the shame it will shurly bring you in the gym, you can paint butterflies or something cutesie like that on them.

unless it's a sharp metal object, they dont care.
Cheap tent stakes are generally questioned, but allowed .. the triangle ones are a different story, though. Either way, allow plenty of time for security if you plan to carry on a tent.

hmmmmmm, tent stakes, i wonder if there is anything like that in rock climbing oh well, unless your an aid climber with all the pitons and hammer and all the other jazz. If worst case sceniario, you can just backpack to where your going!

i get frigging stopped every time i fly. even if i make it through the screener/metal detector when i'm waiting at the gate to get on the plane they always pull me out of line and search my ass... last time they took a pair of scissors they found in my bag just as i was ready to board the plane (and murder everyone w/the scissors..... ) but they asked me if i wanted to carry it beneath the plane w/the luggage... you can usually use this option. i find it hard to believe that they would just confiscate something but mayb e a mo. after nine eleven they didn't have all the logistics worked out yet. good luck

Sorry for the jump in logic, Brett .. my climbing trips generally double as camping trips, so tents are necessary.
... and similar to other people on this thread, I avoid checking baggage unless absolutely necessary lest my stuff ends up in some cool, exotic place without me.
(Everyone at the SLC gathering witnessed my luck with baggage claim.)
