A good day at the gym

I just got back from a good day at the climbing gym. This was a particularly special day.

I was only there for an hour. I went straight from the office, and climbed in my office clothes.

I finished 3 super easy beginner routes, 15' high on the 30 degree wall. I almost finished a fourth one. Quite a few people were cheering me on, but it wasn't meant to be.

What's so special?

It's been 5 months since I last climbed. I remember that day. I didn't have a particularly good day, but I finished 8 routes in the gym. Two days later I had a stroke.

I didn't know if I would ever climb again. In fact, I didn't know if I would ever walk again. I had lost my sense of balance, and couldn't stand up without holding on to something. I spent about a month in the hospital. They made me wear a bracelet that said "Fall Risk." I have a new sympathy for retarded people, because I was there. When I started walking again, they said that I looked like a drunken sailor. More than one doctor asked why I had rough hands, which made me smile.

I also had surgery on my right shoulder and left wrist.

I've been looking forward to this day. I had wondered how I would do. I did alright, considering, and I'm happy.

Wooo Hooo!

Wooo Hooo!

Woooooooo Hooooooo!

Today was the first day I ever left the gym without sore hands. That certainly felt different.

Always look on the bright side of life.

Congratulations man. It's awesome that you were able to get back to what you love and that you have such a great outlook on life. Stay positive.

PS... we don't say "retarded." Mentally disabled is much better :)

Technically his use of the word retarded was correct, because his ability to walk, climb, or even stand up steady was severely retarded.

oh, and congratulations on un-retarding your mobility! In all seriousness this is one of the best posts I've read on this site. I'm glad your back in the game, and I hope you have a lot of fun!
congrats again!!!!!

When I first clicked on this thread (A good day at the gym) my original intent was to flame it mercilessly. However, I can now see that yours is a truly inspirational post. Congrats on your recovery and best wishes.

I'm with Curt, even after reading the first half of your post. But then there was the "I had a stroke" that changed the post a little bit, congrats and good luck.

He said "retarded people." That is not correct. If he said "I know how people who have retarded movement feel" then it would be correct. Beyond that, let's agree to disagree and just be thankful that the OP is doing well.

your post made me smile, glad to hear your reconnecting with what you love, keep it up.

Oh, and we don't use the word retarded or mentally disabled, "challenged" seems to be the new PC term whether it's congnitively or physically.

Thanks for sharing this with us man, be well

The "we" i refer to is the field of mental health. That being said I'm not real anal about it. I'm more stoked for the OP and wish him the best!Smile
