The Sugar Loaf which everyone is talking about – this is bolted multi-pitch, as far as I understand? Anyone got a topo of routes there? What sort of grades are these?

Is there other climbing within city limits? Some single-pitch bolted sport-routes, for example?

I am a french grade 6a/6b climber (5.10 in US money, I believe). Will I find a lot of climbing at my level within city limits?

How far is all the climbing from the city centre – whatever the “centre” means, I don’t know Rio’s geography very well yet, but I presume that I would be staying with my girlfriend somewhere central.

How easy/difficult is it, really, to find a climbing partner? (I speak absolutely no Portuguese). I would probably only stay for a week or so in Rio, so I wouldn’t have several days for just looking around and getting to know people, I would like to climb from day 1 after my arrival, ideally..

Professional guides – if I don’t find a partner, I may consider hiring a professional guide for a few days. What would be his/hers daily rate, especially for multi-pitch climbing?

What time of year is most popular for climbing?

I just returned from Thailand (Railay/Tonsai), it was VERY easy to find a partner – I simply left my mobile number on a message board, and got several text messages the same day. Is it similarly easy in Rio? On the other hand, when I wanted to hire a guide for a day of multi-pitch, this was VERY expensive – around 170 USD for 1 day. If anyone can compare Thailand with Rio, that would be very useful.

There's some info at the links above.

5.10 trad skills will get you up Sugar Loaf
There are many other options in Rio (sport, trad, and bouldering)

Portugese kind of looks like Spanish, but doesn't sound a damn bit like it.

Depending on how adventurous you are, you could go to a climbing gym (I think one is called Limite Vertical) and I'm sure you can find partners there.

thanks, the links are useful. Any idea how much professional guides would charge for a day?
