I'll be at a conference in Ventura (just outside of LA) in mid-March and, since most camera gear is significantly cheaper in the US compared to Australia, I'll probably be taking the opportunity to make a few upgrades. Any advice on the best stores in the area?

Thanks for the tip. ... but hmm. It seems that the price differences aren't that great any more. 3-6 months ago I would have made a killing on the exchange rate; now it works out more or less even.

As a climber, you ought to take the pilgrimage to the Patagucci store in Ventura. It's a beautiful old building, and you can see the shed where Chouinard used to make pitons while he waited for surf to come up.

Don't know about Cali stores but as far as online I got a Nikon d700(which is frickin sweet) retails for around $3,000 for less than $1,700 at www.Shopdigitaldirect.com. Great deals but their customer service department blows.

Have you actually received your D700 yet? http://www.resellerratings.com/.../Shop_Digital_Direct

Have you actually received your D700 yet? http://www.resellerratings.com/.../Shop_Digital_Direct I was wondering the same thing. Having dealt with too good to be true sellers, I know how this can end. Mine was over a $210 flash, that they were advertising for $150. Since it was more than $40 cheaper than the next best price I went for it, and it took 4 months to get the flash, after a bunch of attempt by them to squeeze me for more cash. They even threatened to charge me a 20% restocking fee for an item I never received! I did get it eventually, after threating to contact both the BBB and the attorney generals office.

My only complaint with the company is the customer service sucks. it takes them forever to respond to emails and phone calls
