I just had a random (and not entirely cheery) thought. We've got the "in memory" forum for threads about various users who have passed on in climbing accidents or in unrelated ways, but what would y'all think about putting some sort of notice on the actual users' profile? I'm thinking like just a brief heading saying "this user is no longer with us, and here is a link to his or her 'in memory' thread," something like that. Here are a few profiles off the top of my head that could use this: stymingersfink, michael, rock_diva, cragchica, jimmyray, gambler (though he disappeared, we do not know where he is right now)... anyway, just a suggestion. I'd be interested to know what people think.

I don't mind it. I'd like to hear what others think.

I like this idea. I wouldn't even mind having a link identifying who these departed climbing friends of ours are. Curt

Awesome idea and one that should have been attended to long ago. Remiss of us to have not thought about this before. Thanks camhead, great idea mate.

Perhaps just a header that says "Sadly, this user is no longer with us. Please see his/her memorial thread HERE" with a link. This would be in addition to the sticky thread, which would have links to each user's profile. We would perhaps have to work on different wording for Gambler's profile. Who knows, perhaps there could be some sort of climbing icon that could accompany the header; a pair of shows laid down or something like that, which would say "off-belay..." that may be a bit cheesy, though.

I know it's a bit late for me to chime in but the idea is a great one at and deserved. It in the end keeps a historical record of the user that is easily clickable for family and friends in order to obtain the past users posts.

The ball's rolling on this. I started and locked a place holder in In Memory Of, so the developers have something to link to. I'll get to work next week on filling it with listings. I guess I'll just make it alphabetical.

I'm a bit sensitive to this as Reardon was s friend of mine... I think it's a good idea.

This is done, but i don't know if we're missing usernames for some of those folks. If anybody sees one in there that needs a username linked to them, please PM me.

I've been debating making the following suggestion, as I wasn't sure if it would be too much, or perhaps depressing. But it has crossed my mind more than once that there should be some indicator that the person who has posted something has passed away. For example, you know how some people have a star next to their usernames? Well, perhaps the deceased could have a small "RIP" in that spot. I don't know - somehow I would think it a show of respect and acknowledgement, because we'd know that the message/photo/whatever was posted by someone who is no longer with us. On the other hand, is it too big a downer to see that when you're in a random forum? Back to the first hand, though, this would necessarily only appiy to past posts, so it's not like it would be constantly in anyone's face, but it would add a bit of bittersweetness to perusing older threads. Still thinking about it, but I figured I'd put it out there. Sorry if this has already been suggested somewhere.

It hasn't to my knowledge been suggested previously, but I have thought about it, and I decided against it. Like you said, I think it'd just be too much. From the perspective of somebody who will (assuming the longevity of both me the site) someday be listed in that forum, I'm a little bit comforted by knowing that I might be remembered. I'm not at all comforted by reminding people over and over again (how many posts will I have by then?!) that I'm gone. But don't think it isn't a worthwhile suggestion, H. Thanks for it.
