Better Searching

There have been many posts about how badly the search function performs. Since I haven’t seen anybody bring up this work around, I thought it worth mentioning.

Go to google.com and click on “advance search”. Set your desired search criteria and at the bottom of the page enter rockclimbing.com in the box “Search within site or domain” . My experience: this works much better than the search function provided by rockclimbing.com.

Good hunting.

You can do the same thing from your browser's search bar by including "site:rockclimbing.com" in the search.

If it's that simple, why don't they just use Google as their own search mechanism within the site? Hope there's a mod reading this.

One thing the search function of this site can do is sort the results by post time (most recent first), which I find quite useful. There are other advanced options that Google can't do.

One feature that's sorely missing from this site's search are snippets (the excerpts from the posts with the query terms highlighted). That is often times more important than relevance, because you get a glimpse of what the posts are about without having to click on each one.

Actually, there is also one very simple thing that Google can't do.....search anything on the site that isn't accessible by "anonymous"Tongue

&%$(&$^($& Search! LaughLaugh

I'd rather have a well-functioning site than one that relies on Google to work right. I have tons on the old plate, but it's nearing the top of the list. Please be patient everybody.

It wasn't impatience talking - I just wondered why. I didn't know putting in google for the search would reduce the functionality of the site.

No, I meant I want the site to work well on its own, not by relying on Google.

Why? That seems to be a testosterone assertion and unrelated to the functionality of the site. Many sites rely on Google for searching. In itself, that's OK.

As mentioned by others, there are deficiencies in Google for site-specific searches, which hopefully would be improved by a site-specific search function. Otherwise, there's no point in site-specific search function.

Why?

We just recently fixed a bug that caused Google maps to malfunction. The bug wasn't actually on our end, it was on google's, so we essentially needed a patch to get it working again.

I'm not saying google will break and leave us without a search engine. I'm saying if we can do something ourselves and it breaks, we'll know how to fix it. And perhaps more than anything else on here, searches have the potential to shut things down.

But, hey, if you prefer to think my balls are so big that they're in the way of site performance, I'm probably OK with that, too. Tongue

Are you freaking kidding? I want less power, not more! Good thing I'm only in charge of a damned website.
