I'm planning a bouldering trip for a university and had a couple quick questions: What's the camping like at Rocktown? I've read on here that there's "camping along the road" and no camping in the parking lot. I've read similar things on Dr. Topo. However, as this is an institutional excursion of (up to) 12 people, I'd really like a little more detail. Can anyone recommend places for 12 people to camp? (We don't mind splitting up into a cluster of two or three sites near each other.) What are the facilities like? Do we need to bring water for the duration, or is there water available for purification? Also, what are the road conditions? Could a 15-passenger van safely navigate the road to the parking lot? Thanks in advance.

You can camp at the bottom of the hill in the spots marked for camping and there is a cool cave across the road you can go into at night for some fun. On top just 1/2 mile past the climbing parking lot on the right is a second place to camp. My favorite. The van will make it no problem. Bring all your own water and everything else you'll need. Nothing is on the little hill. Gas station about 5miles back towards town has just about anything you'll forget as far as snacks.

Thanks for the quick reply. Just to clarify, the first site is at the bottom of the hill on the approach trail, after we've gotten to the parking lot? Or is it at the bottom of the hill along the dirt road while we're still driving?

Are these sites on the main road marked or do I just need to know where they are? I guess I'm asking if it will be obvious where to camp when driving by in the dark.

You can't miss the first one in the dark but it might be packed by then. Then you'll have to drive up to the top of the hill and pass the climbers parking lot 1/2 mile or so than make a right turn and you'll come up on the second camping area. Good luck.

The best place for a group that size is probably going to be the camping at the top. Like Wanless said, when you see the turnoff for rocktown, (a sign will point to the left) keep going straight for maybe 1/4 to 1/2 mile and then turn right. You will come to an area that is open and grassy. Veer left and there are multiple spots on the little hill and in the woods. Have fun.

And then just follow the signs back to Rocktown when it's time to climb?

You just retrace the way you came and turn down the road with the sign for rocktown. If you camp at that spot you are less than 5 minutes of driving to the parking area.
