I'm looking for a place to go climb over spring break this year. Break is at the end of March, and I was thinking about hitting up Big Chief. Any idea what the conditions are looking like? I figure its been a warm/dry winter so I was hoping the conditions would be good.

As I recall there was a bit of a dirt road on the way in and even in a dry winter I'd bet it would take a 4x4 to get in there. I would personally wait till drier times but I would check with a local or the gear shop in truckee for better beta. (ps props for your fingers liking that sharp rock mine hated me after a route or two)

very true. it might be very difficult to even find the correct road and turnoff. big chief can be hard to find.

from my limited experience, the rock was 100% dry during my winter visits- could be due to the high winds and exposure

You can climb there as long as the weather is good. How much melt there is will dictate what/how much you can climb. To get there you're taking a sled up the forest service road or hiking up off 89. In late March you're rolling the dice with snow. You may come up to climb and be limited to skiing/riding, head to Bishop or SoCal if you're set on climbing.

Would Owens River Gorge be a better choice?

You've got a better shot at getting decent climbing weather in the Gorge in March. Gorge can be sunny and perfect in March or super cold and windy, just depends on the weather. If I were you I'd just set out the time that you want to make the trip and if the weather is good, head to Bishop, if it's shitty, head to J-Tree. Pick up the guides for each (for Bishop get Bishop Bouldering, Bishop Area Rock Climbs and the blue Owens guide) and be ready to go to either, then you won't be disappointed.
