Are the rating stars a bad idea for the Ladies Room? If you think so, I'd really like to hear your opinions.

First Star Rating: Brad Pitt Why can we only give up to 5 starts? It's Brad Pitt! ....ok. I don't care one way or the other. Why not have them.

But now a couple folks have made the point that the Ladies Room is supposed to be this safe environment, and ratings seem to counter that. I admit that in my hairy, sex-crazed, testosterone-fueled brain, it never occurred to me. But it has now and it's possible to change it. Should I? keep it star free

I don't think they're good here. They can only make people less likely to post something they foresee as unpopular, even if it's useful or needed. I've seen threads change direction once more diverse views have been brought in, but that can't happen if the people with those views just don't bother because they know that at first people will just rate down their posts. If someone's an ass and posts something lame, anyone can see that by reading it. They are, in essence, rating down their own posts by writing them. But if someone has something valuable to contribute and hesitates to do so because of the ranking, you can go ahead and call him or her weak if you like, but the forum loses out if those people remain "silent." I don't think this is the kind of forum that benefits from the intimidation factor of ratings. It's already supposed to be more heavily moderated than the other forums, isn't it?

A regular conundrum this one is. There are quite a few good points on both sides of this issue. But what I'm seeing is that some people might not not feel comfortable posting with stars. And the others will feel comfortable posting either way. That would seem to lean things toward ditching the stars here, especially in light of this forum's stated purpose. Still thinking. All feedback appreciated.

How is this working right now? Are people feeling like they can't post in here as freely as they did without stars? (Feel free to PM me your answer.)

I like the stars. I know this should be a safe environment and I definitely think we should keep that up and eliminate any personal attacks. But if people get that upset and offended by a low star rating, they're probably taking things too personally. A low rating is just someone disagreeing, it's not a personal attack.
