HP 40 and trash

Recently I was at HP 40 and couldn't believe the amount of climber trash, chalk wrappers, tape, cig butts, etc.
Do you all realize that this area can easily be closed?
Pick up your trash and some other people's trash as well, the good will goes a long way.
"leave it better than you found it."

I agree. I am going up to HP40 in a couple of weeks. I will bring a kroger bag with me, And fill it to the hilt... I do the same at Sandrock and Boatrock. Anywhere there is trash I pick it up. Oh yea and smokers if I can hold my cig. butts all day so can you. It all belongs in a trash can.

I smoke and climb. Its just so easy to bring an empty cig pack and put you butts in it. People flicking their butts is why everyone acts like I am an a-hole when I light up at the crag. If we were more serious about litter no-one would care. I would hate to see hp-40 become another stoney point with broken glass everywhere you put your hands.

People smoking, chewing gum, tape or Powerbars are all the same when it becomes litter.
I would hate to see HP close completely due to this issue.
HP 40 is a gift, one that we can lose if we don't get it together.
Interesting that a discussion on bouldering rules got more replies than this one! LOL!

No doubt! I was up there a couple of weeks ago for the first time in a while, and I definitely noticed a LOT more trash than I ever have in the past. I honestly do not understand why it's so difficult for some people to clean up all of their own crap; and hp40 even has trash cans out there! I'll be heading back up soon and plan on taking out all of the trash I see with me.

Everyone going to Moss Rock Preserve in Birmingham should do the same - that place is a sad sight indeed.

SmileTake a trash bag, pick up some trash, it is good karma, and makes for good access.

Word. HP40 is a mess. Also, any word on Indian Kitchen getting opened again? Last time I was there was about the end of September, and was hearing they were closing it again due to all the graffiti.

is it really climbers that are marking up the rock? It seems dumb to close an area to climbers because some high school dipshits can't figure out a better use for spray paint.

I talked to the employees at Horse Pens and they said it was closed due to a big flake that is real lose. Apparently they had some tests done to it from a out side company, The results are bad they said it is on the verge of falling. A heard they did some sort of x Ray mumbo jumbo to the cracks in the flake.

Yeah, I'd been talking to the family about it. They told me they had some concerns about a significant piece of rock coming loose, but didn't mention they'd had any tests done at the time. From what I was hearing from Papa Shultz, they thought it was due to the acidic content of the chemicals used to mark the rock. Sounded like a bit of a stretch, but he's a pretty nice guy so I just smiled and nodded (read: he was carrying a gun, as always; avoided conflict.)
But for realz, he's an okay guy by me.

From the owner of HP 40 as quoted at Deadpoint magazine:"Some boulderers have zero respect for the land, and they want free access to it as well. There is no such thing as free land or free access, someone has to pay the taxes and all other upkeep costs on ALL land. Someone pays for the electricity, the water, the insurance, the repairs, the upkeep of the grounds, and more. If turns out that that person is me, I would do just as well to not allow bouldering or any other day use that does not pay its own way. HP40 doesn’t need bouldering to survive, and I will not pay the expenses to provide free access for those who will not pay the cost that they themselves incur."

Any one that has been there, should feel that way!
The problem is they don't.
The rest of us can pick up trash, and help keep the rowdies in line.
It's a good habit to pick up a bag of trash every time we go climbing, especially climber trash.Unsure

I dont understand how the same issues come up at every crag on the planet and somehow it never changes. Im a "crag cleaner" and have never personally watched anyone leave stuff behind but oh boy the day I do.....

I hope its at HP40. Mike would gladly help me hide the body.
